Three are some differences protection wise and the metal mixture is supposedly different. But only time will tell. The material they put on the seams and closing that front area with plugs in theory should help alone

Process was different for both frames. The 2nd gen frame is trash and the massive recall notice reflects that.

Explain how the process is different minus a few extra frame plugs and the white coating in the front rails? It still the same shitty open channel frame design that traps water.

All Toyota frames are trash. They always have been and always will be. I’m sure the boxed 4th gen frame is going to rust too. You just won’t be able to see it as it rusts from the inside out.

The frames are not trash , the chemicals they put down trash almost any frame . Now I will say that metallurgy on the 3rd Gen is claimed to be better . But at the same time , boxed , c channel , fully boxed makes no difference on any brand . The chemicals they use now will eat through almost any thing if not protected . My 2019 I treat with mavcoat every year and I am on my 5 th northeast winter and it looks brand new. Including the fasteners . The chemical that does the most damage is the brine that they spray on the roads . Real bad stuff . I’ve seen plow truck plows with 1/2 inch thick steel that were powder coated when new with big holes eaten through. That spray has a sticky material in it that is meant to stick to things. At the same time it sticks to your undercarriage, that’s a problem for a lot of things . Ball joints , brakes , bushings, lines , all sorts of stuff .

Living in the rust belt, I have real concerns about this new boxed frame for exactly the reasons you described. My 17 looks good, but it is super easy to touch up with some rust reformer and move on with life. Boxed frame is gonna present some challenges and unfortunately Toyota hasn't earned the benefit of doubt in this department.

I never worried about rust on any vehicles I’ve owned until I got a Tacoma and 4Runner. I never did anything to any of the other vehicles other than an occasional washing in the winter. Now I have a truck that had to go to the dealer to get the frame checked and some goop sprayed on it and also now have to fluid film each truck each year. Their frames suck. The steel is thin and sandwiched together and it’s paint/coating is garbage.

There’s nothing you can do but try to spray some fluid film inside the frame. It’s pretty much impossible to coat the whole thing though.

The second gen frame did have some issues with the mix of metals, Dana but keep in mind most full frame vehicles will rust apart given enough time . At least they did the right thing and did frame replacements There have been other companies that they don’t talk about as much that did nothing .Sad to say but unibody construction is better in that respect . For rust I mean . You do wonder why all theses companies don’t hot dip galvanize the whole frame . That would make it take a very long time to corrode . How much extra would that really cost, and aLso if the truck was 400 dollars more because of that who would really care

It’s not just 2nd gen Tacomas. 4Runner, Sequoia and Tundra frames rust badly too. What other manufacturers have that much frame rot in that short of a time frame? I agree that the frames should be dipped in something. I’d rather pay more for that than floor mats, paint protection film, etc.

But it's not lol. The 2nd gen got the same plugs and white goo applied as part of a TSB and they still rust.

Keep trying to convince yourself the frame is different... It will still rot out if left untreated. Better make sure you apply that fluid film.
