Many dealers will have full engines that are just missing intake, exhaust, and accessories (ac, power steering, alternator)

And usually the techs that are doing the engines are pretty good at them... thats why they get all the engines.
If its not done, and their not saying why, something is wrong and they are either trying to cover for it, or the tech is just really backed up. Ask to see you truck ASAP, if its damaged, then they will either come clean, or you will see the damage.

You guys know the BBB is a bullshit organization right? It's like a JD power award, you pay for your rating/award. They have no merit at all.

Anyway, I've seen engine rebuilds take about a month, but they should at least supply you with a rental for the period. My friend had a hyundai and the engine blow up and they gave him a loaner for the time his car was in the shop about a month and a few days.

Personally I’d like them to keep the vehicle as long as they liked and ensure I get a new engine with a much extended warranty. But my loaner would be a Tacoma or tundra or else I’d be asking them to pay for me to have a rental truck. I personally wouldn’t accept a car loaner when I purchased a truck. I would be telling them I bought a truck due to having a need for one and that a Camry won’t haul my trailer or my boat.

If they're giving you a loaner and paying for the repair, they're doing what they can. Then they offer an extended warranty? I fail to see a big problem here.

Check lemon laws and write a nice email to the north american ceo. I find it is best to right to the top. 800 number poeple are paid to deflect. When i wrote them during my frame replacememnt i received much better info and $1,000 dealer credit. Good luck op

One bad engine doesn’t mean it’s a lemon. Let them fix it and ask for loaner. Put miles on the loaner and be happy they’re not adding up on yours while you make payments. But I’d definitely ask for a truck since I purchased a truck.

This is good. Unless you need your specific truck. Maybe tell them to let you have one of the CPO trucks from their lot. That gives them additional incentive to keep on the repairs.

    Still thinking about it.
Unfortunately this sounds like a normal 'major repair vs. warranty' experience to me. I've been through it with my wife's Mini. I'm sure surprised that it's happening with a late model Toyota though. I'm assuming that's a rare occurrence.

Being a former Toyota mechanic this dealer is crap. They should have short blocked it. Then all you need is an overhaul gasket kit, which covers all gaskets that are needed in a short block change. Since it only had 30k miles on it, the heads just have to be checked and swapped over, all the timing chain pieces would get reused etc. I would bet if you look at the book hours it probably between 30-40 hours pay to the tech, if the parts where available a short block swap can be done in a week. You need to raise hell.

If the dealership is in fact just swapping the block and reusing your rotating assembly, that truck would never leave the dealership (or to a different dealership to trade in).

    For the Camry situation....

    Will it rally?

I'd be talking with the dealership's Owner/President/or General Manger. And they should have provided you a truck for the loaner.

Here is a relevant thread on how far you may end up having to go to get this resolved.
There is also another thread where a mechanic dropped a ratchet pin into a cylinder during a spark plug change and then started the truck, the dealer tried covering it up. He ended up with a new comparable truck after much negotiating. Can't seem to locate that thread, maybe one of the others can locate it.

Lawyers must be so cheap where you live. Everyone on this website is always advising lawyer-up for this, and lawyer-up for that. I make decent money, but I’d be flat broke if I lawyered up as often as suggested here.

I think the worst thing you can do in these situations is get corporate involved. Once you start that war, the guy doing the work is likely just going to puke your engine back in.

It is best to try to understand the situation from the dealers perspective and gain some insight into what the dealership might be up against that is causing delays. Maybe there is a supply issue that is beyond their control? Shit happens, because life.

You want they guy putting your engine back together to be your friend, so they use a torque wrench and whatnot.

My job offers a benefit where for $12 a month I have a law firm at my disposal for any reason. Traffic ticket? No problem. Being sued? Got it covered. Question from last nights Law and Order? Give them a call. It's a great benefit and I would certainly use it in this case.

I'm sure you've been through many repairs with a Mini. I had one, spent tons of money on maintenance and repairs in the 3 years I owned. Had to get rid of that hunk of junk. I wouldn't recommend a Mini to anyone, unless they just have too much money and want to burn it on a car.

Uggh. What a waste of humanity. It’s amazing how much more efficient society was before we got bogged down with lawyers suing dealers over head gaskets.

In the past, we all certainly had more meaningful things to occupy our time, and the legal system.

I would take them up on that offer. Fighting a battle with my previous landlord right now where they held my security deposit for almost 90 days then made deductions. In my state they're required to provide the security deposit and itemized deductions (if necessary) within 45 days or they can't deduct anything. Looks like small claims is in my near future.

Sounds to me like OP really just wants his truck back and the dealer isn't communicating. Doesn't seem like there is any efficiency happening here.
