This doesn’t necessarily mean they lost a sale because they didn’t offer the manual. Many still bought the automatic. I’m actually shocked they still offer a manual when you consider the tooling and vendors needed to support that line. It would save so much money 86ing that line and using the extra capacity to sell 5% more automatics. I bet if you were making the decisions and were the one to receive more compensation for increasing profits you’d likely choose that path too.

Why encourage the idea of you multi-billion dollar multi-national corporation is losing sleep over 5% of Tacoma’s being shipped with a manual over automatic? That is still atleast 10k trucks made and sold with a manual since 2016. There is demand and they still sell every single one?

And I believe they also sell every single automatic too. Simple business philosophy. If your sales will be the same either way trim the extra cost. You make it seem as if my post is influencing and something Toyota doesn’t already know, lol.

No issue supplying manual transmissions for the North American market. There are approx. 500,000 Hilux trucks sold world wide each year and the vast majority of them are manuals.

Toyota is a multi-billion dollar company already saving money by basically recycling their 2nd gen TACOMA instead of a clean sheet redesign. Yamaha made their Niken because they could.

And you think corporations say “we are making a lot of money and we could make more. No, we make enough already.” That’s hilarious.

    5% is higher than expected.

Of prospective midsize truck buyers, it is probably a safe assumption that a shrinking minority has ever owned or driven a MT before.

Not to me they didn’t. I can honestly say that had I not been able to get my Taco with a M/T, I wouldn’t have bought one; I probably would have just rebuilt my previous 4x4 and kept driving it. I’m fortunate though that my Taco was a want, not a need so I was able to be picky and get what I wanted. Had Toyota offered a 4Runner equipped comparably to the way my Tacoma is, I likely would have bought one of those instead.

Toyota would easily sell 5% more automatics to make-up for the elimination of manuals and it wouldn’t matter at all what you did. That would be no reduction in total sales but they would save millions through a reduction of tooling, capital and managed suppliers.

Maybe, maybe not. Apparently Toyota knows more then both of us though since they still offer the Taco with an M/T and (though I’ve not verified this for myself) soon the Supra will be available with an M/T. The night I bought my Taco (two years ago) I was looking at a Supra while I was waiting for my Taco to be washed and my salesman told me he’d be able to sell a lot more Supra’s if they offered it with an M/T.

Bottom line: Some drivers will seek-out what they want and not compromise. Others will let the salesman direct them to whatever model is available then (gasp!) let their wife tell them what color they should get “because it’s easier”

Correct. It isn’t maybe, its certain. Look how many on this site alone are waiting for trucks. The Supra is a different animal with different clientele. Nice try but not equivalent.

When I got my manual Tacoma the sales guy told me all the autos were sold months before the manuals (with all Tacomas having a buyer and deposit down months before delivery). I think most people don't want manuals.

I have an MT Corolla sedan too. Had an MT Civic before that. Drove an MT Wrangler and MT Geo Metro as a teen. I have driven an MT in LA rush hour traffic (and San Diego, and San Francisco, and Chicago, and Dallas, and San Antonio, and Portland...). People make excuses because they want to sound cool, but truth is, if they wanted an MT they would have one and not be cooking up BS for why they "would have bought a MT" but bought an automatic instead.

Toyota barely even advertises that they offer the manual. They get the fine print on 1 page on the more expensive trims of the brochure. The website won’t even show you if there isn’t already one in your zip code. Never seen any commercials with some guy doing a manual shift driving his TACOMA. Could there be more sales if Toyota tried to sell it more? Be honest.

Of course there could be more sales. An extra 10,000? Possibly. An extra 20,000? Meh. An extra 100,000? Probably not.

Like to argue much? Supra buyers aren't all that different then guys who buy a M/T 4wd. It comes down to what someone (be they an enthusiast or otherwise) is comfortable with or desires. I know this because my GF drives a M/T Porsche (one of three or four she's owned in her life, all of which were M/T's) and she is what could be called an 'enthusiast' driver. When the Supra was re-released a couple of years ago we talked about going to look at them as a possible replacement for her current Porsche. She liked the looks, the power, projected reliability (her only complaint about her previous Porsche's) and the price was in her budget but when I told her they were auto-only (at that time) it ended the conversation and we never went to a dealership. Is that the case for every enthusiast? Of course not, but apparently there was enough demand that Toyota (/BMW who actually provides the powertrain for the Supra) decided to add an M/T to the Supra line-up. Just like there is apparently enough demand that Toyota still offers an M/T with the Taco. In fact there are many on this site who traveled several states away in order to buy one or waited for months on a waiting list. Must be a reason :p

Oh, and buying my M/T Taco saved me $1,500 over a simlar-equipped, auto version of my truck. A fact I remind a neighbor of mine who drives basically the same Taco as mine, but with an Auto as much as possible
