I’m actually curious how long you will keep this going. I’m simply responding. If you stop I have nothing to respond to, lol. I think my responses are fairly factual and aren’t meant to incite. Possibly it’s you?

Personally, I think the MT option is a marketing ploy. It makes people think of a simpler, rugged truck and time. Pretty sure if they made a manual Honda CR-V now there would be some that would buy them, but a CRV is not marketed as a rugged off road beast.
So, you are both right. 10K people buy them each year for various reasons but I bet not many more than that would buy one.
Marketing is a long game to do it right.

I don't really think of a M/T it as a marketing ploy per se as I wasn't influenced to buy my Tacoma by any marketing (I'm that rare breed who owns a TV but only watches streaming services; no cable or local TV) so it wasn't like I saw an ad for a M/T Taco being driven by manly-looking dude wearing a Flannel shirt four-wheeling up a waterfall and said 'I must have that truck!' The main reason I bought my Taco was because my first truck was a '93 Toyota T100 which I still own and drive regularly. Plus for the type of off-roading I do, I'm more comfortable with a M/T.

Which one is better? That's not for me to say. Rather I was just stating my reasons for buying a M/T. Again, had I been able to get a 4Runner with an M/T I probably would have bought one of those. Also if my Taco were my DD I may have had to give getting an Auto more thought.

Understood you were not influenced. But take the normal guy who can't even drive a stick, realizes that a Tacoma comes with a MT and only old school, primitive rough and tumble trucks still come with a MT. He promptly goes out and buys an AT Sport with all the bells and stays on the road forever, knowing a version of his truck is manly enough to have a MT version.
I think even if they did not sell many MT versions they would still offer it for the marketing.

I doubt there would be many more sales, even if Toyota sold it more. My guess is Toyota knows its market well. Considering that only two trucks are sold on the US market with an MT, the other automakers clearly agree that the market for MTs is small.

It is ashamed, MTs are cheaper to buy and cheaper to own. Plus, MTs are much more enjoyable to drive in my opinion.

Even finding an MT car is a challenge.

Speaking of MTs, what’s the configuration for 2022 where you can get the AC with MT. Just the Sport trim?

Yep, ever since the SR 4 cylinder MT was discontinued after 2017, the Sport is the only way unless you are in Canada.

As long as I drive an ICE, I'd prefer a MT. To be fair, it has nothing to do with manliness, I think many people are more interested in the lifestyle aspect of a vehicle than the practicality. Look at how few station wagons are sold in the US because they apparently indicate that one has a family or has "given up", even though station wagons make a LOT of sense from a practical standpoint. Same with small cars that are hatchbacks; they make a lot of sense. For many people a vehicle is an appliance to get from point A to Point B, and they care more about how it operates rather than how looks. I see driving as a luxury and an activity in itself, otherwise I'll ride my bicycle or take transit, therefore, I want to be as immersed in the activity as possible. I love that I can bump start a manual transmission if I need to, and rarely does one hear about issues with manual transmission crapping out. I also bought the last available vehicle sold in the country with manual hand crank windows.

I chose the MT not because of marketing (hell, when I was looking at Tacomas, I didnt even know it was an option), but because, at the time, last July, there was ONLY one model available in the trim I wanted, and it just happened to be MT.
I did come from a long line of Jeep wrangler ownership, and all, except my 97, were MT. But, that had no influence over my purchase. I didnt want to wait 3 months on the POSSIBILITY of getting the trim I wanted, and them not taking my trade in at the time, which they valued at $5k over blue book.
That being said, I love the MT. I recently put a Sprint Booster on it, which makes accel MUCH better. Given the choice again, I would likely stick with the MT, just because I think its fun to drive. I like having control over where it shifts. Granted, I dont live in the city, so I am not constantly stopping and going with traffic. Were that the case, it may influence my decision. But, I live in a small rural town in central MA, we dont even have a traffic light.

I was watching a very dry engineering video on Porsche manuals and they have to sacrifice performance due to EPA noise regulations. Anyway they touched on Gladiator and Tacoma enough to say production of manuals are limited by Jeep and Toyota due to it pulling down MPG numbers, so even if they can sell more they wont.

I love my 2020 double cab 4×4 Taco. There were two on the lot that day, both manual. I jumped at the opportunity. I work in EMS and live in the appalachian mountains of TN so I have to be prepared for any weather. I've even moved my tiny house with it. Wish they were more common.

Really wish they’d offer double cab w/ long bed MT. Access Cab works alright, but a pain when carrying passengers.

Having had m/t cars and trucks my entire life and needing a double cab long bed, I had no choice but to have my first automatic transmission. After six years with it now, I can unequivocally say that I don't miss the manual at all. It works just fine, I don't have any of the complaints that seem so ubiquitous here, plus my gf can drive it. I still have my 911 that has one of the sweetest clutches ever and she'll have to learn how to drive that when I'm gone.

when your misses is 5ft tall and slams seat to the dash to drive theres plenty of space in an access cab lol. Ive only carried passengers in the back of my trucks a handfull of times in my life so no big deal for me personally. have 2 cars if needing to carry passengers

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Marketing is far more than a simple one off advertisement. And yes you are being affected by "marketing " even if you do not consume standard media. The simple fact you discussed manual transmissions on a forum specific to Toyota Tacomas absolutely 100% proves that point. And is itself a form of marketing; brand awareness through unpaid promotion (aka you) is the absolute best form of marketing any company could dream for.
