But isn't it true that if you argue against the facts laid out in front of you then you're just a troll. That's what I heard, or read or was told.

Dude youve got to be trolling. Where do you keep hearing/reading all this BS?

I was quoted around $1400 for a headgasket job on a 22re. Thats not even an engine out repair.

I'm still trying to replace my radio with a hand cranked gramophone, but last week I successfully replaced my ham radio with a reel of string and a couple cans.

The tech (former Toyota master tech) that diagnosed the last HG issue in my 92 said he believes all 22RE's should get a rebuild after 150-200k. Between the hg, timing guides/chain, may as well pull it out and do a full rebuild at that point.

Yeah it’s much cheaper to repair a string.. at least that’s what I hear someone was told to read once somewhere.

Yeah not to mention the fact that "new" or "rebuilt" means you can pretty much throw out any expectation of that Toyota reliability everybody talks about. The whole point is not to have to do that at all, you want a good engine that hasn't been opened up since it came off the line. Something you can buy at around 150k and take to 300k. I'd take a 150k 3RZ or 2TR over a "new" or "rebuilt" 22RE/3RZ/2TR with 5,000 miles on it 100% of the time.

There's really not much difference. Both '89-'95 trucks and '95-'04 tacomas have boxed in frames. They both will rust out if you live in the rust belt and if you don't take care of it.

Pick what you want and go for it. Each has different yet similar merits. I love the Tacoma, and love my 85’. For what you want to do with it you are going to have to open your wallet, or get mtb....

Then get yourself a truck with a domestic pushrod v8. Those aren't necessarily all that reliable, but they are dirt cheap and easy to work on.

The 22RE's were (are) great motors. But that doesn't mean the newer 2.7L or 3.4L is crap. They are equally great engines. The 3.0L is inferior only because of the head gasket issue. Once that is replaced, it's generally a pretty damn fine engine too.

People regularly put hundreds of thousands of miles on Tacoma motors.

Would you buy a 2019 Tacoma that still uses a motor originally designed in the 1980's?

The newer motors are more efficient, have more power (which is needed for the larger and heavier trucks), and at a certain point, people will stop buying a vehicle if it is still using a 25+ year old engine technology, despite it being "good enough".

Also to keep up with competition. Hardly anyone but maybe a handful of us Toyota enthusiasts would buy a modern Toyota with a 30 year old designed engine in it.
