Still have it. The poor guy came to buy it in the day the clutch went out. He decided not to go through with the sale or fix the clutch (or wait for me to have it fixed). So him and his lady just flew home. I felt horrible. Like I ruined their awesome road trip home! I mean I know it’s not my fault the clutch went out that day if all days when they were just a mile out of town.. but that’s still a really sucky end to their trip. Still feel bad about that to this day. But I just put a new fuel pump and spark plugs in her and changed the oil. Still running clean and stronger than my 4Runner or any of my other vehicles. Tip top

@toucan , the seller of the 1987 truck in "Showroom" condition, asking almost 18k is smoking some really good shit. I don't know if it's grass or crack, but this guy is off his rocker. And the insane part, is some idiot will pay close to his asking price. I was watching the Barrett-Jackson car show one day, when the 80's Toyota truck sold for I think around $40K or so. you could have bought at least 2000-2004 1st gens for that money. I didn't know the early 80's trucks were now collectables. :der:

Why is that? I live in San Diego, the truck parts don't seem too expensive.

I thought it'd be more of a job to change out a car transmission/engine than a trucks , -- correct me if I'm wrong. Particularly 2002+ Accord

The whole point of buying a reliable vehicle is so you don't have to change the transmission or engine out of your vehicle. If your budget is only $2000 to $2500 you need to find an old Civic or Corolla.

I think those will have higher repair costs if shit goes wrong, such as the transmission or engine-- they are disposable cars, are they not?

If something big goes wrong in a $2000 car you sell it on Craigslist for $1200 as a mechanic's special and move on to the next one. But they are not disposable cars, if they were, there wouldn't be a ton of 7th gen Corollas and 8/9th gen Civics rolling around everywhere. I just sold my Mom's 9th gen Civic with 225k miles for $3100. Still in great condition, got 28-32mpg, and the 1.8 didn't burn a drop of oil.

I think the engine overhaul / transmission overhaul is more expensive than that, is it not?

+ I'd be going with an accord -- 4 cyl -- with a timing chain

Why do people get upset or act surprised that a desirable, collectable 30+ year old vehicle is now going up in price?

I have 3 80s toyota pickups, am on several groups/boards for owners of them and I see this all the time.

Model A and T cars went through this, 50s hotrods, 60s-70s musclecars and now iconic 80s cars and trucks are going up in value. It follows a cycle, people who wanted something when they were a kid/teenager that they either couldn't have or they had one back then and loved it but had to sell as life caught up with them. They are now 40+ years old, have disposable income and want to relive their younger days or experience something that they always wanted but didn't get a chance to.

There are only so many good examples left, many have succumb to accidents, rust, wear, being sold out of country etc. Supply and demand, simple as that.

In another 10-15 years there will be 40+ year old guys seeking out that sweet Honda Civic, Eclipse or similar with the giant wing like the one they owned in high school or wanted in high school but couldn't get. Heck, look at Supra prices for example.

Here's an article where the Toyota truck is listed as 10 Cool Cars That Gained a Cult Following.

    https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/g833/10-cool-cars-that-gained-a-cult-following/

    25 Biggest Cult Car Classics.

    https://www.complex.com/sports/2014/06/25-biggest-cult-car-classics/

    From the 25 article:

But that is what cult cars are about—to-the-death allegiance to a particular make or marque no matter how seemingly irrational it may be.

Somehow I keep falling for cult cars.

Is there a cult car-a-holics anonymous help group?

Believe it or not I had a 22re and the speedo stopped working one day so I called several toyota shops and every single one said they wouldn't work on it because it was too old. They all referred me to the Toyota dealership who I'm sure would have ass raped me. Also none of them would rebuild the motor as well. It was a cool little truck I enjoyed driving but heavily underpowered
