It has much less to do with engine size then you think and I'm sure there are many reasons. Laws/regulations as mentioned above is definitely a factor. Another is caused by us as a society: we are the most sue happy culture out there. This causes manufacturers and lawmakers to become very risk adverse and create extra margins of safety not see in most European nations.

I lived in the the UK for a few years and it was common to see saloons towing caravans in the slow lane all the time. Yup, these are the same size and weight trailers most will warn you are too heavy for the Tacoma and needs a full size half ton truck or larger.
    [IMG][IMG]

    An example:
I owned a 2013 Passat Limited TDI and was caught smack in the middle of Dieselgate. I was stationed in the UK at the time and had the Passat shipped to the UK (bad idea, but that's a different story) during my PCS. When VW finally authorized buyback of military owned vehicles overseas in 2018, I happily turned over the keys to VW and accepted my locked in 2015 value plus $10,000 (this is what paid for most of my Tacoma!). This was the outcome of the Class Action lawsuit in the US. I had a few UK friends that drove various VW models with the exact same TDI engine with emissions defeat software in their EU spec VW. No Class Action lawsuit, no buyback, no extra $10,000 for hassle/dissatisfaction/being lied to. This is the country we live in. Toyota doesn't have floor mat issues in the EU.

Certain sections of the site don't count towards post count. I imagine the "New Members" section is one of them.

The person that runs out of money to pay the lawyer(s) first loses. Our legal system has become a joke.

Toyota been scamming us since the gen1 came out. The 4cylinder model had a tongue weight of 350 lbs and 3500 towing, but the beastly v6 offered 600 pound tongue weight and 5000 pound towing capacity.

Don't worry, they're resetting in response and will give everyone an inline 4 with the fourth gen.

Thank you for some positive feedback.. unfortunately this place has some Toyota fan boy trolls..That aside it maybe a combination of a few different factors..US regulations, up selling by Stealerships, frivolous lawsuits etc. when a customer only wants to tow a small trailer or just have the option to do so, some people have a distorted view such as someone towing a 10,000 lb trailer thru icey mountains when they inquire about a standard trailer hitch to tow a wave runner to the beach.. as another member pointed out Toyota punishes the realist with the "poverty trim" level if a customer wants a basic 4 cylinder engine that gave Toyota its legendary reputation for longevity.. yet another member mentioned waiting for a turbo 4 cylinder which is completely counterproductive as the newer engine would be a roll of the dice on longevity..the entire reason for getting the 2TR-FE is longevity that adequately can do the expected tasks at hand and future expectations of tasks..

Just because Toyoya doesn't make a truck that can actually do it doesn't mean other trucks can't! I do it in a 450 hauling cattle and never have had a problem!

Welcome to TW. Everyone gets trolled initially.

Not much demand for 4-cylinder which is why they limit options, and as others have noted, different regulations limit wht they can do in the US.

Now for a scam, when I ordered my 2021 Offroad DCLB last year, I ordered a specific set of accessories. When it showed up a few were missing (like I wanted locking lug nuts but didn't get them) and a few things I didn't want (mud flaps). No big deal, I was happy when the order came in. But, since supply was so limited, when you looked at inventory listings, just about every truck had a ton of add ons. It was Toyota and the dealers way of getting some extra high margin profit on items that could be added at port or at the dealer.

Minor scam. I suspect they are still doing it. It is a sellers market. Can't blame them for it. When deals are everywhere and we negotiate prices down as low as we can, they feel similar frstration.

Get a Tacoma. They are fun.

this, different countries have different rules about towing. Mainly safety margins, higher safety margins means less towing capacity on the same vehicles.

    Which one,
You haul cattle in a 2.7L 4cyl F450, or you set the cruise control at 85mph while hauling cattle? Or both?

Welcome to TW. Change 1 word in your first sentence and you nailed it…..what appears to be…business practices by Toyota in North America…

Yes, they made a business decision. Demand for low spec trucks is limited and lower revenue per unit. Done.

There are a lot of gripes I have about options nowadays.

It's pretty clear they don't care what I want.

Is it too difficult to buy a Tacoma with the 2.7 and spend an hour bolting on a tow hitch? Seems like a pretty simple problem to solve.

Problem is mostly wiring, if he wants a 7 pin its going to be tough.
