My 2019 Tacoma, with 53k, had the engine go out. Most likely a leaky head gasket, from what they said. It was running fine, I stopped to do some errands. When I started it up, it popped,
and blew smoke. When they looked at it, they said no compression in the cylinders, and the crank case was full of coolant. When they took it apart, the found a cracked cylinder. Rather than replace the engine, Toyota is rebuilding the engine. This is not what I expected from the warranty. This is my third and last Tacoma.

I doubt they're rebuilding your bottom end. It's not practical to repair the cylinder liner.

Toyota doesn't sell a long block. So you're likely getting a new short block and they're reusing any parts that are still OK from your current engine.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
You can't 'rebuild' a cracked cylinder. Either something else was broken or you misunderstood the diagnosis.

You're expectations were most likely incorrect. Read the warranty document carefully. It sounds like you are being repaired, which is what the warranty offers. Did you expect a whole new engine or something?

That's fine. Keep in mind that all marquees have problems and all OE warranties are quite similar in the nature of what they will and won't do.

This is probably a miscommunication or misunderstanding. As stated there is no such thing as a long block for this engine. They probably have determined all it needs is a short block. The standard procedure is to replace anything broken and reuse whatever else. I doubt there would be much better luck with other brands and their respective warranties.

I guess it’s a huge disappointment or let down when Tacoma’s are constantly referred to as “bulletproof” “dependable” “rugged” “reliable” “high quality” and something like this happens.

Preventive maintenance is very important to achieve longevity. However, shit happens and stuff like this happens with any mass produced vehicle.

My brand new 1992 extra-cab V6 5spd 4x4 Toyota truck blew the head gaskets twice. Once under warranty and again out of warranty. Toyota and the dealer fixed them both times no charge. Did not know this was a common issue with the 3.0L back then.

Kept the truck and enjoyed it for 14 years with no other issues. Just regular maintenance. Sold it for great resale too. Was a little shocked at that.

Sorry OP, sucks that it happened to you. Luck of the draw and shit happens to the best of us.

Sounds like they have you covered with a short block.

While it sucks,,, there were a few million or more of these engines made, so a rational person would figure one or two,, or a few hundred would go up in smoke.

Think of how many people that are in a serious financial jamb, because their out of warranty vehicles have had catastrophic engine/trans failures,,, so there's that to be thankful for this holiday season.
