Here's how I'm playing this whole thing. I performed service campaign K0D at the Dealer which qualifies the truck for the ZKA 12 year frame coverage. I'm doing NOTHING to prevent further frame rust and perforation during this time so Toyota can't say something I applied or did something to the frame to void the coverage and or contributed to the rusting. That said, you can 100% bet this frame will qualify for replacement in year 11.5-12 (at which time I'll protect the next frame annually and get many more years of use from the truck. In my opinion this is a huge gift from Toyota on the 16/17 model years and has a lot a value.

So you will let your frame rot. Have some kids rip your truck apart to get a new frame. Then you will coat the new frame. So 12 years from now you can bet the price of said coatings will be up. So it's pay now pay later or coat now coat later. Makes absolutely 0 sense.

I have a 2021 with only 5,000 miles and live in Florida. Just noticed a lot of rust and am freaked out. Is this normal? Checked my Vin and there is no recall. I’m prepared for normal maintenance, but didn’t expect to have this happening. I guess I’ll take it to the dealer, but am open for suggestions as I’m concerned they’ll try and brush it off as “normal”.

It’s normal. It’s just surface rust on bare metal parts. There are lots of products out there to help prevent rust on those areas if you choose, but the dealer isn’t going to do anything about it. Everyone has their favorite product, but I chose WoolWax. Just be careful not to get it on your brake pad/rotors.

Yep, you'll see that on every tacoma. Those parts will outlive you before the rust gets the best of them. Its the cardboard thin frame, and other chassis components that are far more prone to rust problems.

I have a late '17, 90k miles, Wisconsin. It has about as much frame rust as I would expect for 4+ winters. I never got a letter and no recalls listed on my Toyotacare login. Does this recall show up there? Am I a fool for ignoring this potential issue? Did any fellow Wisconsinites get the letter? The letter posted on the initial post of this thread says time's up on August 31, 2022 for this recall. TIA for any advice, bad or good.

My 2020 is on it's 3rd Canadian Winter. As I've always done with past trucks, every spring I get under it to check and any rust gets hit with Rust Converter, then Satin Black paint, then fluid film. Hoping this helps prevent any future issues, and takes me all of a few hours once a season. I like to do my spring clay/wax at the same time while I am waiting for coats to dry.

It will show in the app if your truck had it done. You can also crawl under and see if they put the plastic caps that are towards the front of the truck across from the end of the tranny (both sides). Or just take it to the local dealer and ask them. They will likely schedule you for the service if it’s not already done.

Only time i ever received a frame inspection letter from toyota being here in connecticut was 10 years later after i bought my tundra. Dealer where i purchased my tacoma told me that toyota has done its part, its now my responsibility to keep the undercarriage rust free as possible. I sprayed it with cosmoline rp-342 a couple years ago....been extra salty this winter, so far all looks good as before. I wouldn't rely on toyota, a lot could change in 10 years.

Been pushing this frame recall inspection off for awhile, but I think this is my last chance to get it into the dealer. Crazy amounts of rust and corrosion over the past 3-4 years.

Can anyone share their details of this latest or last campaign? Who received the coating vs anyone have a frame replaced?

Here is my letter, going to call Page Toyota in Southfield tomorrow.

I undercoated my frame from day 1. After 3 years it the undercoating was getting a bit thin in spots so I reapplied. Still looks as good as day 1 thank goodness. I brought the truck in for inspection and the tech said that what I did wouldn't void my warranty but who knows. Another friend brought his 2nd gen in for inspection, undercoated his chassis and the shop did a horrific job. I almost think its worse to have a partially undercoated chassis than a bare one

When i brought my tacoma in for the 1st visit of toyota care the dealer asked me who, and what coated my chassis for rust. They were impressed with the job i did. I guess now they have a shop down the road they recommend doing the same on vehicles if an owner wants it done.
