That would be typical for the roads here in new england. They spray the roads with this corrosive ice melting chit in advance of any storms that it rots out cars in a few years if not washed ever month during the winter season.

christ! didn't know it was that bad. I still don't get how tf toyota hasn't done something after decades of this crap happening. I would assume
not enough complain about it so they don't bother.

If my truck was originally sold in Illinois (a cold climate state) but is now titled in Missouri (a non-CCS in Toyota’s eyes) is my truck still eligible for the frame rust inspection?

The recall notice does appear on the homepage of my Toyota Owners profile, however I did not receive anything in the mail from Toyota

Yes. The recall does appear when I do a VIN search however the more I read the fine print I see verbiage like this:

“Any authorized Toyota dealer in the Cold Climate States (CCS)”

I was just curious if any other owners had a similar situation with buying a vehicle in a CCS but not having the vehicle registered in one. I guess if my local Toyota dealer turns me away I can always drive across the river into Illinois.

Sorry if this was already covered, but what is the make up of the CRC they apply?

While I agree some form of rust preventive should be applied, never ever ever use a rubberized coating on a frame. The problem with bedliner or undercoating... if you get one small failure point of the spray on material, that's how salts and moisture get in, but they have no way to get out. Fluid film or something kinda oily will provide the most protection against corrosion.

I don't get this. Steel rusts.
Would you prefer a frame made out of stainless steel?

I applied this crc last winter..i had the truck new for about 3 months when i applied it...it seems to be holding up..i will crawl under there again when work slows down...not shure if it needs applied every yr like fluid film....i have a test going outside...i speayed the crc on a stick of rebar and have the rebar leaning ip against the building out side in the weather and sun and rain...its been out there about 7 months..and i do see its showing trace abounts of rust..so i think this stuff needs applied every yr..

I guess its possible if toyota supplies or specs. out that cheap chinese steel for dana to build their frames with. On another note i've seen frames not treated well on other vehicle makes that rust pretty bad to...mostly frames built by dana.

When my 01 tundra frame was inspected for a bad frame under their program. They replaced the spare tire cross beam carrier and the fuel tank straps and used that crc stuff on it which was part of that mandatory program. I wasn't too impressed with it. I noticed after a couple years i had to re-coat it with fluid film as that spare tire carrier was already rusting pretty good in places....same for the fuel tank straps. Only best advice is to keep on if you plan to own the truck many years.
This is the first time i've used cosmoline on my new vehicle so it will be interesting if what they claim about this stuff holds true. At any rate the undercarriage of this truck now looks better than when i first picked it up at the dealer.

I'm not in the metallurgical industry but are frames from Ford, GM or Dodge rusting at the same rate...?

When I lived North of the Mason-Dixon, all our vehicles were rusty underneath. Can't speak to rates, but I'm pretty sure it's been established that Toyota's issue stems from sub-prime coating, not the alloy.

Just curious where you got your speculation about impurities from? Any data points to share?

All boxed frames will rust if given the chance, it very very rarely has to do with the steel type/quality chosen, but more to do with how much material there is to rot away. Toyota has long been taking a compromise of using thinner gauge steel in order to save weight. 80s Toyota pickups might be 1/8" thick in some parts, but the inner walls are close to 1/16". This is a big reason why they switched to boxed in the front, c-channel from the cab back... at least the salt and moisture has a chance to get off. Small pickups have ALWAYS been notorious for rusting out quickly. If you care about your vehicle A) wash off road salt before it gets a chance to oxidize B) use a preventative.
