If your truck doesn't match the vin# for recall. It certainly is a warrenty issue with a leaky diff.

every single pumpkin should be bone f*kin dry all around the seal and gasket area

on the recall list or not, all these pics or a little oil stain on the pumpkin, you know
what that means, really ? the axle needs to drop and diff seal removed, cleaned, and resealed and retightened no exceptions

NONE of those stains on 'non recalled vins' are good news

f toyota dealers if they cheese out on anyone presenting a weepy pumpkin and they
don't do a new gasket ...unacceptable

Ha! I know better than that. I didn't talk to him getting advice. He's a buddy and it happened to come up in conversation. I'll just schedule the appointment. Thanks all.

Are you f' ing kidding me. When they first took your truck, that should have generated a document number to let T Corporate know your truck needs a recall fix kit. Maybe you can call T Corporate with that date since you were one of the first ones in.

Correct, 2 dealers told me the same - ALL that are in rental vehicles when
parts are ready will be first to be repaired, everyone else bend over and take a #.

I took my 2017 in for the 10k mile service this morning. The VIN is in scope for the recall, they noted that, checked it, and said my truck is not leaking. Which I knew. I did look at the oil after and they did change it.

If your Taco Diff locks up on the Highway doing 70mph, while you are patiently waiting for a fix, will your heirs be suing Toyota? They aren't putting people in loaners for the hell of it they are trying to protect your life and themselves from liability.

Yes I know, however they don't want to put every single person who has a slight weep into a rentals for 2-3 months. However they don't have a choice due to the liability. That's why it's "preferred" that you wait until you get the recall letter in the mail. I've told multiple here about the saftey risk, and that's why this is a recall. It's a big liability I'm not arguing with that. If you read my other posts you would see. I'm simply stating that there isn't a need for everyone on here who just noticed a slight weep to run out first thing next day call Toyota bitching, then get pissed again when they get put in a rental (knowingly due to posts on here) and told it is going to be a month or two before a authorized fix is even available. If someone isn't happy that they are going to be placed in a rental than they simply should of just keep an eye out for an actual leak that would cause damage to the rear end and actually unsafe to drive.

It looks like they standardized the "damage check" by using objective facts (amount of fluid left in diff) instead of subjective ('looks" damaged). That seems like a wise choice tbh. It takes away the... discretion some dealers might use to say it isn't damaged.

I just want people who have the fix to come back and say it fixed their howl. :fingerscrossed:

I agree if it is just a "slight weep". Mine had a couple of drops hanging from the diff and a small wet spot in the garage. My assessment is that this is more of a dynamic leak vice a static leak but I could be wrong. If the service dept would have physically checked the level and recorded how much it took to top it off, an informed decision could have been made. I heard about the recall, checked my Taco and discovered it leaking. When I took it into the dealer I wasn't given a choice to keep driving my Taco. At that point if I refused to leave it I would have assumed the liability. My Taco is 18 months old and has 18k miles. My Taco has been in the shop for over 40 days. I am now scheduled for a Lemon Law Arbitration Hearing on July 11th. Toyota will have no choice under Florida law but to repurchase or replace my Taco (my choice)

What about the xxx,xxx (hundreds of thousands) of people who drive a Tacoma who aren't on TacomaWorld, and who have no idea about the recall until they get a notice in the mail, in June mind you.... I guess they're all screwed and will die!!! o_O

Pure logic suggest it's not as big of a deal as many would like to believe. Don't get me wrong, I don't think my rear diff should be leaking by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that it wasn't a immediate recall, and that most of us had already been driving the leaky bitch for xx amount of miles already, would suggest you'll be fine.

Long story short, keep your truck and tell Toyota to keep they're rental, get the fix when it comes in.... And yes, I would tell my relatives to sue the shit out of Toyota if I died.

There have already been reports on this site of rear diffs locking up on the highway. Fortunately no injuries yet! Is your diff leaking? Do you know how much diff oil remains in your diff? The repair procedures call for replacement of the Ring and Pinion if diff has less than 2 liters remaining. I'd be ok if they would check diff level but they won't. You're probably too young to remember the exploding Pinto's. I have no confidence in Toyota.

Got a call from my service advisor, the parts (gasket and bolts) were received yesterday and installed today. I'll be stopping by in the morning to pick it up, have had the loaner (2017 Tacoma) for 41 days.

Interesting, because my SA told me today they don't have the new bolts yet and it could be another 3 to 4 weeks. They've had my truck for a month and a half.

Make sure your Repair ticket specifies exactly how much differential oil was drained from your Tacoma. If their was less than 2 Liters the dealer should have replaced your ring and pinion gears as well. The Technical Instructions published by Toyota are very specific on this issue.

BTW - Depending on the state you live in your Tacoma may be eligible for a replacement or repurchase under your states Lemon Laws. Check your owners manuals closely.

Same here, nothing in yet and no idea when parts will be in. I never took mine in though.
