You might want to reconsider. After 47 days my truck is finally fixed. That's the good news. The rear diff holds 2.9 Liters of gear oil. The recall repair instructions direct the technician to precisely measure the amount of oil drained from the differential. If the amount of fluid drained is less than 2.0 liters the technician is directed to replace the carriage assy. Apparently Toyota Engineers concluded that damage to the carriage assy is likely at anything less than 2 Liters.

My truck had only 1.34 liters of oil remaining. My truck was last in for it's 15k service and inspection on Feb 12 - no leaks found then. 1.56 liters leaked out between Feb 12 and May 9. I put 2,282 miles on the vehicle during this timeframe. Based on Toyotas criteria I had already been driving a vehicle where the differential could have locked up at any time. Based on the leakage rate my diff would have surely failed in less than 2,000 miles. I put about 1k a month on the truck. It would likely to have been bone dry before ever receiving the recall letter.

I just received the recall notice in the mail today. In red letters it states to call your dealer "immediately" if you see oil leaking.

BTW - you are not likely to see a puddle of oil in your garage. Mine had a couple of barely noticeable drop stains. I had to crawl underneath the vehicle to spot the leak and it didn't look that bad. These leaks appear to be occurring only when the vehicle is being driven.

Probably only leaks when the diff gets hot enough to open up the gaps.

That would help explain the number of photos showing "raindrops" all over the undercarriage.

86 in the Que??? I hope that's not one dealership. Toyota estimated 2,000 nation wide would be leakers.

That was just at this one dealership (that's the number I was told over the phone anyway). And where did you come up with that number? Over 200k were recalled.

This is pretty scary and sad at the same time ... black eye on Toyota quality. So the issue seems to be faulty gaskets ? ... if so, time to find another supplier.

Toyotas recall notice says 228,000 are effected by recall plus 5,700 in Puerto Rico. They only anticipated 1% of these vehicles to have actual leaks. I think they gravely underestimated there numbers.

That's right...I read and heard 1% recall numbers. I got the 1% number from the Service Manger at my Dealer for what it's worth. Which is 228,000.

Yeah we won't know for a time what the real number is.
