Only takes Toyota a day and a half to switch the frames. I waited 9 months some waited a year and a half

Yes in real cost yes. But if there is enough bad publicity, that can cause the stock to drop and that is big bucks. Toyota lost millions when the bad publicity and congressional hearings were going on about the acceleration fiasco they were involved with.

They bled your brakes because they had to pull the axles to remove the carrier to replace the gasket, to pull the axles they had to disconnect the rear brakes. This indicates that they actually did the repair as instructed.

Or that they at least had brains enough to fill out the invoice correctly...

News flash for those who think Toyota is worried about Tacoma sales taking a hit. They purposefully limit Tacoma production in order to meet CAFE standards in the US market. Leave them and there are 5 more standing in line to take your place. That is why the used ones hold their value so well. They were mildly scared by the new Colorado until it turned out that the reality didn't match the promise. I'm sure the new Ranger has them somewhat concerned, but again they really don't want to sell TOO many Tacomas. If you want to know what keeps them up at night it is how to increase their market share in China, which is the fastest growing car market by far and they are getting their butts completely handed to them by VW, Nissan, and even General Motors there.

Fun fact: the cool car that all of the young Chinese professionals want to have to show off their success is.... a Buick. I tried to explain to a 27 year old Chinese girl in Shanghai that this is what old people drive in the US, that a young person here wouldn't be caught dead in a Buick, and she didn't believe me.

Thank you for the global perspective. I had not considered their purposely holding back Tacoma sales, however the CAFE argument has merit--it also explains what motivated them to put an SUV "Crossover" engine in the 3rd gen trucks...

I thought I was going crazy but the same thing happened to me. My diff was completely clean when I checked at home after bringing back from the dealer. I am not on the recall list.

July 1st, I took the truck in for 10k oil service, mentioned the rear diff leak. They held it for 5 days, did not issue loaner. Instead told me parts had been ordered. They called me 2 weeks later saying they wanted to take pictures of the diff to send to Toyota Corp. I complied and went in, an hour later they sent me on my way. They also restated they would call as soon as the parts came. I get home and my diff had clearly been cleaned and degreased. I shrugged it off. This was all around the middle of July. Now we're in early August and still no call back from them.

On a side note my service advisor lady is sexy AF.

... I wish. Body like J Lo.
The awkward moment was when she walks away then suddenly turns around to catch you checking out her backside. Makes talking about your driveshaft concerns a little uncomfortable afterwards.
... yeah I better call to follow up on this rear end issue tomorrow.

Michael's Toyota in Bellevue, it's been two weeks, and they say another 4-6 weeks, which might be 6-8 in real times :)

They must know or assume that your truck will be on the next round of recalls. Better to order them now since it takes 3 months, or maybe longer once the true numbers start rolling in.

Well, I'm one more victim of the Taco diff recall. Brought mine in for the 6 month check and recall letter. I didn't see any leaking or oil stains around the rear diff so didn't think I'd be "chosen".
1300 miles and now it's stuck at the dealership. Service guy said could be up to a month wait. Rent-a-car place gave me a little Jetta to drive.

I don't know, seems like in today's world recalls impact virtually every manufacturer to such a large degree that something like a Taco rear diff issue is barely even background noise unless you are dealing with a group of enthusiasts like on this forum. Maybe if this happened to the Camry, that would make some waves.

This is crazy though, I can't believe Toyota pooched a 100 year old technology like a freakin' differential assembly so badly. I'd be pissed if my new truck was stuck in a shop for a month for something like this.

I was "chosen" too. Took it in yesterday and the technician warned me that they would keep it if they found a leak. I told him confidently that i had visually checked it and didn't see any leak so i should be fine.

They gave me a 2017 Rav4. The funny thing is it has better acceleration and doesn't lug or vibrate like my truck.

The woman in service said bolts so I specifically sought information on bolts from a manufacturer, but she could have misspoke.

Yes, CAFE is driving a lot of frustrating stuff, even in high end cars like BMW. Even on a $45K plus car they are moving to lower displacement turbocharged engines to get horsepower with better gas mileage. Did I mention that my lead foot NASCAR wannabe wife absolutely HATES turbo lag?

She did, the carrier assembly is mounted on to 10 studs threaded into the axle housing, and fastened using 10 nuts. It is the nuts that are replaced when the service is performed--Toyota part number 90170-08036...
