Service advisor told me today. All rear ends were improperly over torqued from the factory. My OFF-ROAD eventhough it is not under the recall, the nuts we're over tightened from the factory. Seems like a quality control issue. I'm getting a new diff gasket...on special order. Should be here in a week or two. My truck came from the Texas plant

I have a 2016 off road dclb automatic (not on recall list)
On my first 5k service I informed my service advisor about the howling 54-60 mph (crown toyota in Ontario Ca.). I was told everything looked good after the service. About 2 weeks later I got a call(unexpected) & was told to bring my truck in to have the rear diff carrier assembly replaced. They replaced it, the techs took pics and documented leaking diff. The new carrier was alot louder than the original. So I took a tech on a ride along he heard the noise. They gave me a loaner tacoma. 2 weeks later I got my truck back with another new rear carrier assembly. This time on the receipt the toyota engineer stated a slight noise will come from the rear end & will be normal. After about 2k miles the howling got very loud again. Took it back in(gave me another loaner for 3days) they pulled the assembly out put it back in, new gasket & fresh brake fluid. Toyota engineer stated the noise was normal. Service advisor told me to call corporate they strung me along for 3 weeks just to tell me what I was told at the dealer. Normal. So normal they swapped the rear diff carrier assembly 2x. Still howls, seeps fluid &windows rattle when cracked open.
Love the truck handles great in the snow & the winding roads going up & down the 330, 38 & 18 (big bear lake ca). Looks good too. The gremlins just irratate the sh*t out of me.

There is no way that is normal. My truck has 16k miles and makes no noise at all, never has. My experience with Toyota is they say it is characteristic of the vehicle any time they can't fix it. This is only my 4th Toyota. Depending on how it goes itay be my last Toyota. I had to call corporate a few months ago about an issue I was having with transmission tsb. I got absolutely no where. Very shocked about their lack of service.

I doubt your service advisor has a clue. One of the recall steps is on the diffs that show NO signs of leaks the procedure is to re-torque the nuts. Toyota has said from Corp they have implemented a re-tightening process at the factory. That is an under Torque condition.

Mine is weeping. I checked the nuts myself. They were definitely more than 28ft lbs. The oil is already getting past the gasket. The recall doesn't apply to Off-road or Pro trucks because they have 8.75" rearend, not the 8" like all the other Tacomas.

    Hey guys,

Just thought I would share my issues for reference.

    (2017 DCSB Manual)

Changed my oil the other day at 5k because the dealer refused to change it earlier. (facepalm) I had it up on the lift, and noticed some oil leaking around the diff seals. Im quite annoyed as the truck was at the dealer 3 weeks earlier for the first check.... either they didn't even check the diff, or they torqued it and caused the leak. I had checked it about every month or so and hadn't seen the leak before. lame.

When I brought the truck in the first time I complained about the howl. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to bad on my rig. Only around 2k rpm freeway, throttle pulse. Of course they "didn't hear it." So today I went on a test drive with a mechanic to prove it. Chill guy actually acknowledged the noise and promised to look into it. Im glad to not be alone on this one. reaaaaaalllly annoying on a new truck.

I got my truck back today with the new rear diff gasket...mine was not under the recall. OFF-ROAD and PRO trucks aren't included in the recall. The installed a new seal and torqued the nuts to 33 ft lbs. Said the factory has been over tightening the nuts. I had a loaner 2017 Tacoma Sport with 5700 miles on it. Rear springs squeak and I got that Clunk as you come to a stop at 12 mph just like my truck. Toyota just keeps sitting on their hands on these trucks!!! I would like to add my dealer experince was good today! Pic is after the repair.

When did this recall thing get issued by Toyota? Has it been corrected at the factory? My Texas built TRD OR (manual) was built in October of 2017. Just wondering if my truck may show the weeping diff. Mine currently has less than 200 miles on it.

First of all, the recall wasn't for trucks that have the Off-road package or TRD Pro because those two trucks have a different rear end. You'll just have to keep an eye on it like I did mine and get it covered under warranty. My truck didn't even start seeping until 15,000 miles.

The Recall was issued on April 27, 2017. Toyota said they were implementing a "re-tightening Process" as of March 2017 so regardless you are probably in the clear. Mine showed signs of seeping around that time and was on the recall list. I chose not to take it in and have my truck impounded for months while Toyota dicked around. The rear end now is dry and no more fresh seeping and it is still full of fluid. My local Toyota dealer has 64 2017 tucks on the lot brand new, in a city pop. of 500,000. and they are calling me non stop wanting me to trade in my 2016 for a 2017 and will give me the greatest deal ever...LOL Yea right. But having 64 2017 trucks in the middle of December is not good in a small market.

Wow! It's been a month since any comments, Toyota must have got their act together. Almost six months since mine was fixed, still dry. Then again, I have put less then 3,500 miles on it since then. Hope all is well with the rest of you!

I had a 2016 4X4 SR5 access cab that was on the list and had the recall, it was seeping but I never took it in due to the 3 to 5 month wait BS. Well I traded it in last month for a 2017 TRD Sport 4X4. But I still had the 2016 Vin on My Toyota app, well I noticed 2 days later, they replaced the gasket and did the recall. So maybe they have caught up.

Called yesterday to make an appt for my wife’s car, and asked for status on the recall since it’s been over 4 months with no call to come in.
They said they still don’t have parts

most likely the dealer never ordered the parts. I think the whole delay fiasco was more on the dealers not at all interested in doing warranty work.

I took my 2016 in for the cam sensor recall today. When I called to set up the appointment, the young lady said, "let me make sure we have one in stock" before I could ask the same question. They did, only took a little over an hour with oil change while I waited. O a funny side note, there were at least twelve Toyota's, various models and years, one was burgundy, one blue, then my orange Tacoma, all the rest were either white or silver, and the dealers lot had about the same ratio. All the bright colors in the world, why do so many chose such bland colors? Are there just a lot of color blind people out there?

Lol the dealer tried to tell me that the is "Normal leakage" from the differential!
I showed them Toyota's documentation and photos of what is considered a leak (e.g. "even a small seep is considered a leak") and asked them to reconsider. I told them that if it is not repaired I expect the service record to indicate "Normal leaking observed from the differential, and no action was taken."

I then opened a case with corporate while the truck is still at the dealer explaining the situation. I am told I will hear of their determination in the morning.:annoyed:
