I might try to go this route and hold onto it a little longer. Just a little frustrating, as I planned to keep this truck for 10+ years. I'm not one to buy new vehicles often and continually trade them in. I bought this truck for the Toyota quality/reliability. And thus far, I'm just not getting that confidence from it. My days of spending weekends in the garage working on my vehicle are over, as I'd rather be spending my time out enjoying my hobbies. I wanted a vehicle I can just get in and go without worry, and this Taco is letting me down little by little.

The truck is perfectly fine and normal. You're just spending too much time on Tacoma World. All of these issues and problems are made up in your head, a figment of your imagination.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I will say during my time away from TW, I was able to stress a little less about it. But, the issues certainly did not go away, I just tried to ignore them. And staying off of TW helped me ignore them.

It was a stop sale recall, at least for BMW dealers. Maybe that is the difference, trading it to another manufacturer dealer vs same manufacturer.

If you were really concern, they would get you into a loaner BMW, there were guys who have had a rental for close to a year. They did however let you take your car home but you had to sign waiver that you wouldn't drive it (car under recall).

Preach it. I always buy lightly used vehicles 2-3 yrs old and drive them to 200,000+ miles. This is only the second new vehicle I've ever purchased across all the vehicles I've owned and I purchased NEW b/c I "knew" that if I bought a new bulletproof Tacoma, I wouldn't have to worry about anything mechanically for several years. I've spend more time diagnosing and trying to figure out what's wrong with this truck than on my last 4 combined and I've only had it 5 months and it has 9k miles.

I don't think the integrity of the studs/nut is at issue, but rather the tightening over/under that is at question. Something apparently went wrong during final assembly. Also the torque specs on the Toyota service manual can be confusing to say the least.
We've already had a report of at least one dealer damaging/breaking one in the forum. Most likely an impact wrench was being used to check for looseness, but who knows. But I won't be the least surprised of more that we may never hear about.

Moreover, it's not unusual to replace the studs on that type of differential.
For one, sometimes in braking the seal in order to remove it, it may become necessary to use some blunt force trauma persuasion to break it. I've even seen some damaged by someone trying to use a chisel or gasket scraper and gauge the housing.
But even is it just takes some gentle shaking to break the seal, it's still a little heavy and as you drag it to pull it out it may bend some of them. Or it may rub on the stud threads causing damage and throw off the torque or even cross thread the nut upon reassembly if not addressed.

It is therefore best practice to just replace them. I see nothing wrong with that.

That may not help clarify the issue, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
    Cheers!

I too tried another manufacturer dealer, and they said no go. Perhaps it's a state to state thing. I'm in CA, and apparently there is a law against dealers selling cars with open recalls.

Of course there's no law that says they can't buy them, but I guess they just prefer not to.

Like I said, the dealer whom I bought the truck brand new from, where it's sitting on their service department waiting for the remedy, won't even buy the truck back.

    None yet
Does anyone know why they will fix the problem on a truck not identified in the recall based on warranty?

So I just checked my VIN. I'm not in the recall. I am scheduled for my 15k service tomorrow at 8a.m. and figured I look underneath. Found some wet spots....Also has anyone performed this recall with Hendrick Toyota of Concord?

    Should I postpone?

If you are not on the recall, it will just be treated as warranty work.

That's just pitiful assembly. I believe they are really slapping these trucks together. Toyota cant live on it's die hard reputation forever if they keep cutting corners with cheap parts and labor.

Just back from taking my 16OR in....they retorqued the bolts, refilled (~ 1/8" low) differential and cleaned it. Told me to keep watching and bring it back in if it stats seeping again. Service tech also told me they were submitting to Toyota since it is the 8.75" rear end and said to expect a recall soon.

I just took in my 17 OR because it had some spots where it was seeping out on both sides. My VIN wasn't on the recall, so they are treating it as warranty work. I showed the service manager the pictures that I took and they took it back to look at it. A half hour after going in, they came back and explained that they would need to keep it for about a week, waiting on the parts to come in. They will be taking it apart, replacing the gasket, and sealing it all back up. They asked if I needed a loaner and gave me a 17 OR to drive until they're done with mine. So far it hasn't been a painful experience for me.

If it's leaking they need to replace the gasket not just tighten the bolts.

because you are not on the list, it is not an issue. They can fix it. If the truck is on the recall list, they can't do anything but keep it because Toyota hasn't authorized repairs for recalled vehicles yet.

@Z50king wants to know if there is an approved Process by Toyota to fix the trucks on Recall list. He also wants to know why the TRD OR seem to not be affected by the recall notice. Finally he wants to know what the fix is.

This is all speculation from me after talking to my dealer, Toyota care, etc..

    - Seems there is a process in place for fix, but no parts yet.
    - My bet is that all the 'failed' diffs were Sport/SR5 models, and the OR will be next on the recall list. I think it would be far too difficult to do an entire line recall right away, so they kinda just started with the Sport/SR5.
