    Update:

Today i dropped off my rental for another rental (renewal every month). I got a hold of my service advisor and asked on any info. He said there hasn't been an update on the fix and that they would call corporate.

I asked "do you know if my truck will be needing a new gasket, casing or differential?" He said, "your truck hasn't been fully inspected because corporate told the dealership to hold them until a solution is presented."
I said, "i thought the remedy was going to be a gasket and torque bolts?"
He said, "initally yes but some issues have come up on the replacements"

    What in the actual phuck?!

Yeah the fully loaded Ford 150 4x4 has V8, power everything seats, side mirrors, heated and A/C cooled front seats, satellite radio still in free trial only 3000 miles. I bought my Taco for "reliability" "quality" and what I could afford so I got the basics. I was OK with it as a matter of fact I Love my truck and kinda miss it. The one thing that bugged me the most was it came with a front window camera mount for Go-Pro but intermittent windshield wipers is not an option with the base package!! Really!! So on Monday May 15th I was told est. time for repair would be 1-90 days that was a quote from the manufacturer to the dealership. Enterprise said I would have to check back with them in 30days to redo paper and so forth for every 30days.

Went to my dealer to see what was the progress on my truck, turns out its just been sitting there for the last two weeks. My Service Consultant said that my truck will remain there till Toyota gets back to them with a remedy for the issue, whether it be to torque the bolts or install a new gasket, or in my case replace the entire rear diff. I was also told that there was no estimated date, and that it could be weeks or even months before Toyota has a remedy, at this point Toyota has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Its been a total of 17 days
Look at how sad my truck looks....

IMG_1900.jpg While I wait for them to sort this out I torqued down everything hoping to slow my small leaks. Figured I lost a little so I picked up a liter can of rediculously overpriced Toyota differential oil to top it off. It took the WHOLE CAN!!!!!!! Truck was definitely level. Less than an ounce left before it overflowed the fill hole.
Anyone holding out for the official fix, top it off! Unless you're actually trying to burn it out and get a full differential swap. You'll need GL-5 75w-85 diff oil, a 24 mm socket, crush washer, and 36ft/lbs of muscle if your interested.

It really sucks to hear this. If it was Nissan, everyone would be saying 'typical' and yet Toyota seems to still get a pass from John Q Public.

I like both companies and to be honest Nissan has been pretty good with the current trucks.

So the advisory basically said: There is no fix yet and trucks have not been worked on or repaired because the trucks that were worked on and or repaired had issues.
    Must be a former salesman.

Toyota knows exactly what to do, it has been stated in their documents. It has more to do with them getting parts slowly. A large financial commitment to parts quickly is not good for the quarterly earnings. Same reason it takes 6 months to a year to replace frames on the 1st and 2nd Gen trucks.

Think about this, they haven't stopped production of current trucks and or rear ends. They have the parts but they are for the production vehicles, they have to make more and are not going to do it all at once. Because they (suppliers) could make shitloads of bolts in a week that would cover everything, same as gaskets. But Toyota would have to pay up all at once.

As ridiculous as it sounds, Publicly held companies like Toyota would rather spend more money in the long run than less money up front. It is similar why we finance things, many don't have 35 to 45K laying around so we pay more in the long run. Toyota does have enough money lying around, but the stockholders would shit a brick and the stock price would drop if they did the right thing and spent the money up front to care care of their customers.

Toyota is looking out for Toyota period. Same with most big companies.

This recall really seems like over kill to me. I could see keeping the truck if it had a wet drip of an oil leak. But keeping them for weeks or months for what is simply an oil stain? I dont see the danger.

Because most likely the oil leak will get worse and the rear end will loose oil. Most car/truck owners never look under the truck and their have already been reported cases here on TW where guys had the rear end crap the bed because of it. So this has obviously happen way to many times already. So Toyota would rather spend 30 bucks a month on a rental car then have to settle a class action lawsuit on a safety defect.

Just think. A Tacoma driving down the road has the rear end cage and the truck slides into the oncoming lane hitting a school bus with elementary children killing most of them. Yea Toyota doesn't wan't that. Bad publicity causing the stock price to drop would cost them more money than paying to hold trucks. BS I know.

Probably right. I just havnt heard of any lock-ups. $30 a month on rentals? More like $30 a day, minimum, $900/month. Thats why it surprises me that for $50 worth of gasket and nuts they dont have these parts ASAP.

Not going to go back and look, but I think there was a least one lock-up here on TW.

I think what he meant to say is 36lbs is for the diff fill plug since that is what it's supposed to be.

I think the amount needed to fill it back up needs to be emphasized.

There was another on here who had what appeared to be a minor leak and it also took the whole can to top it off.

Even though some of these leaks look minor, it appears that quite a bit of the fluid is seeping out.

Or else they were never full from the factory (now where have I seen rumors of Tacoma mechanicals not being topped off from the factory?).

Either way, don't just torque the bolts and think you're good if you have a minor leak. Check it to be sure!

It was meant as a joke Joe, but if air bags were essential for them they'd have them.
But on a more serious note, I have seen our operators get into accidents with our fleet vehicles were the air bags didn't deploy at all. But thanks to our must wear seat belts or loose your job policy, no serious injuries.
But I have seen cases were the air bags have deployed a few seconds after the fact, both at work and personally. One of my neighbors had collision at a busy intersection and after getting turned around and finally stopping, the air bag deployed braking her nose.
Notice air bags are only effective if you have the seat belts on. So yeah I wear mine, but those expensive and dangerous air bags can go as far as I'm concerned.

    And no I'm not kidding

they can make a big difference in injuries if they deploy when they're supposed to. But if they don't they can cause more injuries.
Hell even if they deploy when they do they can cause more injuries. When my mom and dad were in an accident a few years ago the only injury besides bumps and bruises was a broken wrist for my mom and it was becasue she put her hands up and then the way the airbag hit, broke her wrist.

But there's times they could potentially save your life. But they need to work when they're supposed to lol.
Ticket for not having a seat belt is brutal and kills insurance so ya, I always wear mine. And yes they are way too expensive. My airbag light is on in my jetta and I won't repair it becasue its $2100 to replace.

But either way, point was, if your vehicle came with airbags and you remove or disable them and get in an accident, insurance will point to it, and deny coverage. And when it comes to insurance they love looking for a reason not to pay out.
Couldn't tell if you were serious or joking though, sometimes not sure if someone is joking or just really stupid lol

So be it, yeah the insurance companies are licensed to steal too.
But you can get around it by shorting the fuse and re-installing it and they'll never know unless they hang around TW which they don't! Ha! (j/k)
