Anybody have the recall looked at yet? I'm almost at 10k miles and putting it off until I have my 10k service done. I also want this transmission shit fixed too, its an issue going down hills and my RPM's spike trying to find the right gear

I just made an interesting discovery. 2016 TRD/OR, 2WD with a slight howl at 55-65:

I am not on the recall list. As you can see I have the sweating. I confirmed that all the nuts were torqued to 33 ft-lb. then I opened up the fill plug to check the level. As the plug backed out, I heard a sucking sound that got louder and louder as the plug backed out. When I eventually pulled it out, there was a whoosh as air rushed into the diff. Sounded a lot like when you open your gas cap.

So, the oil level was ok....maybe slightly below the overflow, but certainly enough. So I put the plug back in and went about my business.

    Now, two things happened:
    1. I am pretty sure the howl is gone, though I have to confirm this over a longer period of time
    2. the sweating has gotten worse in a 20 mile drive.
I am speculating that over time when the diff heats up and the fluid/air inside expands, the pressure increases. then, some fluid and gas made it past the gasket, equalizing the pressure and causing the weep. Then after cooling down, the pressure decreases, causing a vacuum in the pumpkin (this is when I checked it). After the vacuum is released, the pressurization cycle begins again, worsening the sweating as fluid and gas is pushed out.

I will be monitoring and waiting for the ORs to be added to the recall.

Just go to the call on mine, no leak inspection complete and I'm on my way. I asked about new bolts or gasket she said nope not needed you fall under the majority with no issue just inspection required.

Whatever, probably a load but I'm assuming since it's a recall of an issue crops up in the future they should be responsible? Who knows

So, it appears that they finally have a fix for this by replacing the gasket and new bolts. Anyone had it done yet? Sorry, probably already been noted so don't kill me, but I must have stopped following this one by accident.

Check your differential breather on top of the housing that little silver item. That's to prevent exactly what you say is happening it allows pressure to escape when it gets built up.

When I took my Taco in several weeks ago to look at the rear diff, the service advisor walks me to my truck and said it is bone dry. The technician and advisor are standing there showing me the drain plug side.

Yup, that side is bone dry. Now take a look at the other side. Ohhhh.

They tightened the bolts, cleaned it up and sent me on my way. I should take a look to see if the seeping has started again.

No seep whatsoever. Will keep an eye on it for any future weep.

Side note they couldn't find my squeak from the leafs, so when I came to pick it up I wasn't surprised to hear they washed it prior to searching (it doesn't squeak when wet, obviously).

Pulled the tech outside, leaned on the bed and sure enough creak creak. He's giving the bushing a shot of lube. If it keeps up they'll replace the leaf stacks.

So if they keep your truck for a long time at the dealer due to recall does this mean that your truck requires more than just adjusting bolts.... my truck has been on the shop since May 6, 2017 , obvoliously the issue seems more complicated for some trucks , they told me my truck was on the recall list and they had to keep it .

I thought I had a squeak in the leaf springs too. When I was under there I figured out it was the spare tire squeaking in its cradle. Cranked up the chain, no more squeak.

In my case it's definitely the leafs. I was bouncing the bed while the tech sat underneath. He isolated it to the bushing and the dampeners. This was for sure the problem because when he gave it the lube, the squeak dissapeared. For what it's worth

As far as I know, no leak = tighten bolts and inspect ; signs of leak = hold till fix (gasket and hardware) come in.

Guess I was in the lucky group of inspect and retorque... but with the same faulty hardware and gasket who knows if that's the end of the story

What if a 400hz harmonic frequency can cause bolts to back out?

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like that is a spring-loaded check valve that lets pressure out, but does not let air back in. So I guess a little vacuum in the pumpkin is "normal."

Evidently real 4x4ers replace this with a 2-way breather, relocated somewhere high so that the vacuum does not develop, potentially sucking water in through the axle seals. How the seals can pass water but not air I have no idea, but they seem to be convinced. I'm also suspicious that they all refer to the diff cooling "rapidly" causing the vacuum, as if slowly cooling after returning from the grocery store is any different. Not sure they've thought this all the way through. Either way, I don't cross deep water so I'm leaving as-is.

Sorry about that SLO. After the shitstorm and lies Toyota of San Luis Obispo pulled on me over the transmission level and software update, I vowed never to return. I just completed my own second oil change, and now your experience solidifies that the 30 minute drive to Santa Maria is well worth it.

Is it possible for "Santa Maria" to fix my recall issues?
