Will do, but I doubt SM will have very little info, like all the rest with this mofo leaky rear end recall...

Im on the same boat. They have had my truck since May 1st. I called corporate and they said they won't pro rate my payments for them having my truck. Reason, because they gave me a loaner. If you find out any more info please let me know. Fyi my truck also has the second recall for the crank shaft. So who knows when id be getting my truck back.

A 2 way breather would prevent vacuum from developing because it's always vented right?

When the diff get's hot, pressure in the diff will increase or air will escape because gas expands when it gets hot. If the gas escapes, and the diff cools, it'll go under vacuum or it will suck air in..... maybe a little of both. There are seals on the end of the axles and the grease/oil can help act as a seal.... especially with a lighter substance like air.

If the diff is cooled rapidly, total amount of vacuum over time would be the same, but it would have a larger spike in force, but for a shorter amount of time. It'll create a better chance of sucking water in.

It's probably not as big a risk as some make it out to be, but the more miles and wear you have on your seals, the higher the chance of it happening. It's a pretty cheap and easy way to prevent an issue.

They have always had a fix as stated above. It was on the first document released over a month and a half ago. They just don't have the backlog of parts thus the supposed remedy wait.

That's what I'm worried about... if it was just the bolts and gasket getting replaced on us that have this, the bolts and gasket on everyone else's rear diff are probably going to go bad at some point as well. That's why I was asking about the fix... I don't think that Toyota really knows if it's the gasket or maybe the relief valve getting stuck that is causing this. If it was a bad gasket, they would have to change everyone's gasket... not just the ones that happened to be showing the leak now and hope that it doesn't happen to others later. If it was a gasket issue (as in some flaw found in a batch), they would have been able to narrow it down to a very small range compared to what they are recalling. Since this is every non-OR Tacoma built since the beginning, I don't see how the gaskets that are rated as good now are any different from what I have... which is leaking.

Something does not add up to me, but that's the engineer in me I guess.

I figure I'm going to end up taking this to my mechanic and get it fixed my way anyway since I really don't trust Toyota or my dealership at this point, so I'm not too worried.

I understand, but I'm calling BS on Toyota on that "excuse"... they are still building these trucks. Therefore, they have the parts at the plant and could easily have those available to send out to every dealership to fix this. If you are still using these parts... you have the supply at your sub-suppliers. This "excuse" tells me they are still trying to figure it out and just holding trucks until they figure it out and tell everyone they don't have the parts.

Again, maybe just me, but I've spent too much time at these factories to even think some gaskets and/or bolts on every non-OR Tacoma are bad... if one is, they pretty much are all the same specs, so you can bet they will all show this issue at some point in time. And to say that they don't have parts is a crock of poo... sorry, they have the parts.

I was thinking about the same thing. If the problem has to do with some sort of deformation on the mating surfaces, then it could be that they are replacing the old gasket with a thicker, stiffer gasket to account for those deformities (may not be like for like).

That's more in line w/ what I was thinking as well, but I would wonder how I have the deformation and the next truck didn't? That's why I'm wondering about the whole fix... and yes, it's easy for me to ramble on about this on an internet forum.

I just can't understand how they say some trucks (the off-road guys) that show this issue and are not on the list... and they don't have parts but are building trucks today... just does not add up to me.

Do the OR Tacoma's use the same breather as the Sport and SR/SR5?

And I agree with your assertion that Toyota is not sure of the exact problem. New gaskets or tubes of RTV do not take that long to accumulate. I also think that Toyota would not do an all out recall on weeping differentials. Does anyone have one that is actually dripping fluid? I would definitely see some concern on Toyota's part for that.

1 month today for me. I was told by the Service manager today. Toyota won't send out recall notice until the 15th of June. So we have a while...

Bla bla bla, brother I'm sooooo past that explanation. They took my truck away on May 6 and I'm still waiting. I already filed a claim with the Consumer Affairs Office to see what happens. I lost so much interest in keeping my truck with this recall issue

I'm in the same boat as you, May 6.

Don't understand why they can't simply communicate with their customers, like just let us know what to expect.

My OR started leaking about 4000mi. All nuts torqued to 33ft lbs. According to Toyota the OR's don't leak.

Says my truck isn't part of the recall. Just went under it right now just see rust spots on the lugs. Looks like i might see some "wet spots" at the top of the differential but can't really tell. going to take it in anyways.
