I asked that question and the service writer said > "doesn't matter what model the truck is, Its the vin that matters.

Correct. However I don't believe any OR, or Limited vins were suppose to be effected under this recall. They have different diffs. Obviously this forum is proof that they have leaks as well, however Toyota is claiming they shouldn't be effected

agreed, if the vin don't fit they must acquit...

Interesting, the service writer claims all rearends are all the same, he may not know what the hell he is talking about then.

Took mine in for the 25k service. They are working on it today. We'll see what develops. Quite truthfully this has caused me sleepless nights worrying about them taking my truck. I decided to 'clean' the rear end housing and got the dirt off of it as well as the slight weeping signs. Assuming they don't 'find' anything (would be kinda difficult with it cleaned I think), I'll keep an eye on it until I get an official recall and they get parts in stock. If however, they decide they want to keep it, I will not go quietly into the night. I need that truck for work, I don't want a car or another brand of truck. I like the Tacoma and I'm leaving with it one way or another this afternoon. I can understand if it's leaking enough to cause spotting on the driveway but not for a weep, especially this close to having the parts come in.

Got a call from the service guy a few minutes ago and he told me about the recall on the rear diff. Told him I was aware of it and had no official recall from Toyota received in the mail. He asked my permission to look at it. I very plainly said they can look at it. Also had checked the box on the key drop paperwork to NOT do anything to the truck above the 25k service. We'll see. I imagine I'll get a call in the next hour or so concerning whether it's done or WWIII starts.

Why would you do that? You just erased the only method the dealer uses to determine that you have a problem. Now they will look at it and say you don't need the recall fix although it appears that you do.

That's a better way of looking at it. I assumed the dealership didn't want to be out of pocket for the fix and rather keep my truck off their lot until Corporate would foot the bill.

He meant Off-Roads and Pros... They are not on the list. Only ones with e-lockers... Not that it makes a difference, my Off-Road is weeping all over the place. Service advisor said tech said it was ok, re-torqued bolts and sent me on my way.

Because I don't want them taking MY truck just because their lack of foresight on getting the parts in to fix it. As far as I'm concerned there is no official recall on MY truck until I get the letter from Toyota. Mine was barely weeping and I'll be damned if they try to confiscate MY truck over that. Once I get the letter, I'll call in for another appt assuming I not persona non grata at the dealership after end of day today. If it truly is weeping then I'll bring it back in once the parts issues have been straightened out to fix it. BTW, once I cleaned it up, that rust looking stuff on the picture I attached seems to have gone away.

Just dropped it off . SA said it's seeping and ran my VIN . Mine isn't on recall list but they are going to treat it as a recall and said procedure is to re torque bolts until "parts" come in from Toyota .

Said no parts available . Re torque , clean the diff housing and keep a eye on it.

Looks like your fasteners were loose and should be ok if they tightened to specs.
I would clean the area off with some brake cleaner or downy real well and check it again in a couple weeks.
And by the looks of it, other trims will or should be on the recall soon also.

Bought my 2017 SR5 in late January. My vin is on the recall list. Dealer where I bought my truck send a postcard (not an actual Toyota recall letter) stating my truck has a recall for the diff. They followed up with a phone call. Took truck in last Friday for the 5K service, tranny TSB, and diff recall. I had checked before hand and my diff was not leaking. Service dept re torqued hardware and everything good. I like this dealership, worth the 1.25 hour drive to be treated with respect.

How can you tell the bolts are loose, vs a bad gasket in there?

I had my dealer look at mine this morning when i brought it in for my 5k service. They ordered me a new gasket and scheduled me to come back when they get the part in next week. So I'm curious as to which parts are not available unless I got the last gasket :anonymous:
