I'm not sure they are necessarily reman in the traditional sense that you're thinking. As in been out into the wild for years and recycled through a remanufacturer. My guess these are parts that didn't meet performance or other criteria initially and were sent back through the supply chain or supplier for reworking.

This is common in any manufacturing environment to reworked stuff. Toyota (at least the mother ship, maybe not Toyota North America) is OCD about tracking defects and if a brand new part isn't right it probably will never be called 'new'. I've worked places (electronics assembly mainly) where a test failure generates a rework and if it passes second time it's still sent out as "new". But anymore fall out is so low and everything is serialized so an initial failure is tracked and generally sold as refurbished or otherwise not brand new even though it never actually left the factory and eventually passes all the same tests as something that worked right the first time.

These are, I'm guessing, in any practical way a brand new transmission. Rather than having the supplier send a transmission to the scrap heap they rework them.

    That explains it better.

I've rebuilt engines, they should have been called remanufactured as they were better than new after Johnny's Machine on Westlake in Seattle WA worked on them. I haven't had any work done there for some time but I highly recommend them.

I mentioned it in an earlier reply, I think terms are important. New is obviously new but remanufactured is distinct from a repaired or just plain used part. I wouldn't personally have an issue with Toyota using a factory supplied reman to repair my truck. I wouldn't bet against it being build the second time with a little more care. It's certainly seems no worse than the original time through the line.

I wouldn't have a problem with those parts either.

This thread brought back memories of a GM dealer replacing the transmission in my friend's suburban with a rebuilt one from a non-gm shop and charging him double what that shop would have charged.

Only a very small number of 2016 Tacomas have 'really' had problems with their transmissions. Which means, a vast majority are fine with the transmissions rolling off the line. I don't buy the argument, 'Why would you want a new one when the new one you had went bad.' That argument don't hunt. Since a vast majority of new 2016 transmissions are fine, why did Toyota not grab a new one off the line and offer it to the OP?

Whats the reasoning for 1 to 2 new vehicles a year? Sounds like a financial shit storm.

You don't have a point. Your rambling is completely irrelevant. The original wasn't built in Japan either. Therefore nothing in your post matters.

The transmission is a new one for the Tacoma. If their is any problems Toyota would rather remove it open it up and see what's wrong and improve the quality. Rather then have the dealer make
As per usual. At least he is consistent.

That's the exact reason they wanted to replace mine. It hard shifted while hooked up to tech stream so they had the data recorded. Dealership pulled it and sent it right to Toyota to investigate. They had a reman tranny replaced within three days. Couldn't be happier with how it shifts, smoother than my audi s5

I should have known there would be more dip sh.. posts coming. What I do or don't do with my money is really my business. If I choose to trade vehicles every year or never its my choice. You are entitled to do the same and its none of my business. That being said I can afford to do what I want! I don't remember asking you for a loan! Oh, and 1 pair of underwear a year?

Now for those who have lost track of my OP. I was merely wondering how others felt about reman trans vs new. Smart a.. comments aside I appreciate the feedback. For those that reply to posts with nothing but crap. Get a life!

What did you expect by coming on here and ditzing Toyota in your first thread. If you knew dip sh*t posts were coming, then why bother name calling?

If you have so much money, just buy another truck, or take the remanufactured tranny, which will have all the bugs removed.

    Have a nice day.

    Thanks for your service, btw.

This 100%. Trade for a 6 speed truck.

I like my auto most of the time, but about 5% of the time I wish they offered manual in the 2.7L DCSB...

I am sure all the reman loving internet ninjas shop exclusively for re-manufactured auto parts, TVs, Computers just because they are of better quality than new rather than they are cost effective. Ridiculous fan boys.

Consumer grade electronics and cheap auto parts are a little different than transmissions rebuilt by the manufacturer with new internals.

I agree. I'm happy if you trade every year so I can get a deal on a good used Tacoma.

Please go back and read my OP. I was not bad mouthing Toyotas. I was wondering about the reman trans in a new 2016 truck.
If I did not like Toyota Tacomas I would not have kept my 2015. And I certainly would have traded the 2016 when I started having trans problems.
I chose to keep both because I really like the trucks!
I also did not say I had a lot of money. I said I can buy a new truck if I choose to. I am an old retired guy. Over 20 years military service Navy/Army. Vietnam combat veteran. Started out making $106.00. Take home pay was $83.00. Did I drive a new car back then? Not hardly.
Its just kind of nice to be able to drive one now!

And your welcome. Most of us Vietnam era vets did not receive many thanks.

Honestly, Toyota can get you new transmission if they want to. All manufacturers have new parts, they just choosing cheaper route.
If that would be me, I would tell them I want new replacement, and don't care how long it takes them to get one. You did not buy used vehicle, and you did not brake transmission, they should not install used (even if its rebuild) transmission.
On the end it is your decision, so you have to ask yourself what is going to feel more comfortable for you in long run, having new transmission or rebuild one?
Again if it was me I would sleep better knowing I got new transmission not a rebuild one, but that is just me. Whichever you choose it has to be best for you.

At what point does a vehicle become used? I'm asking seriously here, at what point might it be acceptable? Should all warranty repairs be with new parts or is there a point where your truck is old enough that maybe a reman is OK?

I've never had a truck with a warranty so I honestly don't know but I've said it earlier in this thread that I think a reman is OK, especially so if it's a factory reman that was never actually bolted onto a truck.
