I cant believe they actually wrote an article based off of a horrible photoshop of an engine swap.

Also "Chicago-based company called CX Racing has a solution." made me laugh. CX Racing doesn't come up with their own solutions, they just copy other manufacturers parts and outsource the manufacturing to China and sell on eBay.

Auto journalists, especially ones like this, are seriously the worst.

I get that people are unhappy about the BMW powerplant under the hood. But how many people will actually buy this car and swap a 2JZ in? I doubt it would even be emissions legal in many states to swap over an old outdated engine into a new vehicle. Usually the car has to meet emission standards for the vehicle's model year. I'm sure some will do it, but those would probably be for promotional/racing purposes only.

Hmm didn't even think about the emissions aspect, I guess it doesn't come to mind when you've got a 30 year old car haha

I have owned every model of the Supra, as well as other makes of Toyotas and non-Toyotas and swapped 2JZs into them. I am a diehard Toyota/JZ enthusiast.

All that being said, im not even worried about the BMW powerplant. In order for Toyota to stay with the inline-6 motor (which has been a Toyota sports car staple since the 2000gt) they would have to do a joint venture with another company being that they havent made an inline-6 in over 15 years. They couldnt have chosen a better company to pair up with. NO other company knows high performance inline-6 engines better than BMW. They have been tried and true especially in the M cars. Even the N54-55 motors (pretty much in every mid level BMW) have been making amazing power when modded by enthusiasts (some with 6-700hp on stock internals), and now Toyota/BMW have improved on that engine by utilizing a closed deck block design (same as the 2JZ) in the new Supra/Z4. This should make the engine even stronger and able to hold a lot more power than the N54-55 motors.

Main gripe is the lack of a manual trans. I dont even think the new Supra is using DCT. This was the biggest blow to the real Supra enthusiasts in my opinion. Its the sole reason why I wont be looking at a new Supra and focused my attention on the BMW M2 Competition (Available with a closed deck inline 6 turbo engine with manual trans).

I'm still fairly new to Supra's but have always loved Toyota's, so I've always enjoyed Supra's but since owning it I've become "more involved." I know a lot of the Supra enthusiast around me hate the new one. I on the other hand rather like it, not as much as the mk4 or mine (because it's mine). But with the lack of a manual or even flappy paddles is just a huge turn off for me.

Although that sounds ridiculously cool, going through the hassle of sourcing a 2UR-GSE, buying one (no less than $6000 for a longblock no harness or computer), going through the headache of figuring out a decent transmission setup (only available in automatic), then purchasing an $11,000 supercharger kit to only make 600hp at the wheels sounds terrible.

On my old Supra, I had a 2JZ VVTi with R154 and basic bolts ons making 650RWHP. All for less than 10k.

The 2JZ is a tank and a timeless engine. Its never a downgrade.

Unless youre planning to swap an LFA.

I figure my plan is about as solid and realistic as most of the people who will say they'll 2JZ swap it.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. 2JZ have been swapped into everything from rat-rods, boats, deloreans, tractors, etc.

Actually, ill put money on the first people to do the swap to be Ekanoo racing. They were one of the first to put the 2JZ into the GT86 (within months of its release). They also have several 1000+HP JZ motors.

No doubt someone will do the swap, but I was more talking about the everyday joe's on forums & Facebook...like the people who would normally buy parts from CX Racing.

:rofl:Yes definitely. I agree no one is going to swap a 2JZ into his/her brand new 60K car using knock off Chinese parts!

I honestly didnt read the article and just posted it on here for fun. I think my goal was successful with the conversation it got going on here.:D Been fun reading everyones thoughts on the subject.
How about just swap the LFA into your supra!:burnrubber:

It def seems silly to put a 2jz in a new car. An older I can see the worth in doing the swap but do we even know what can be done with the bmw engine yet? might turn out to be good minus the auto only option and no paddles. To me all sports cars need a manual. I get the new autos are faster but nothing beats manually shifting gears in a fun car, it just makes it an even more enjoyable/connected drive to me. I need a fun m/t in my life.:pout:

    Anyone seen my wallet?
Ive been preaching about the n54/55 motor for a decade now. I agree with you, they couldnt have partnered with a better company for a straight 6 turbo engine. I dont know how well the b58 will compare to an n series engine but im sure its as good if not better.

My ole berger tuned n54 would rip from 0 to 155 without missing a beat, incredible engine.

I know this doesn't need to be said on this forum especially in this thread but holy hell this x 100000000000! Every time I'm out and about and see a super nice sports car and it's an auto :puke: Brings a tear to my eye. Now a super car well that's different as the flappy paddles are so much better than manually but that's a different topic

Its definitely a different experience in my Supra with the manual. I'll admit it was nice just to put the shifter in D, mash the accelerator and go. I could mindlessly drive the car just as I could my Tacoma or Honda Accord. After the manual swap, it was a learning experience at first (never had a manual). But, I've learned to drive it and definitely have to pay more attention to what I'm doing. Listening to the engine note, pressing a third pedal and shifting instead of checking my phone and eating a Big Mac. But as @SuperBad said, it's definitely a more connected drive.

I've been driving manual since I got my license almost 10 years ago. I've never owned an automatic, so it's just natural to me, but 10x more fun in the Supra than the truck haha

You'll know it's become natural when you start trying to shift in your truck.
I haven't DD or owned a manual in over 10 years and miss it to this day except for in stop and go traffic. I can still jump in a manual and drive it with out thinking. It's like riding a bike. The rare times I get to drive an mt for a full day or more the next time I drive my a/t truck I try to shift it.

I typically don't deal with stop and go traffic anymore so it's good with me haha. The few times I am driving and automatic I always put my foot down where the clutch would be prior to starting it. Or when somebody quickly pulls in front of me, my hand immediately goes to the shifter expecting to downshift
