In your post that I quoted, you connected the dots of data collection/connected services could lead to the "wrong person" using that data to strand your wife or daughter on the side of the road. That's a pretty big stretch. A person that has access to your vehicle/home/school/work is way more likely to commit a crime against you than a total stranger or computer algorithm.

I think there is a misconception about the "I have nothing to hide so I don't care" argument. I think it is more about the liability threshold someone is willing to accept. The benefit that I get from being on social media or using connected devices far outweighs the privacy that I give up. That doesn't mean that I'm broadcasting my personal life to the world to see.

I’m curious as to how the two sides in this thread upload truck photos, regarding license plate obfuscation...
I don’t care enough to go through post history or anything. Everyone wrap up your reply with your stance!
    Blur plate always
    Or
    Why plate blurry?

Unless you're really unlucky, nobody is streaming my garbage to your desk 24/7, where you can parse it at scale with a few lines of python.

    M, W, and F. With 4 or 5 different companies.

You're missing the point though. Targeting one persons trash is not the same as having every persons data collected automatically, all the time, for every trip, and stored in a database that you can access, search and store as easily as you can access this website.

Hit the recycling bin with all the bills and account numbers. Not everyone shreds.

Imagine now that your trash can automatically scans every item you put in it, sends a copy to the trash company, which they then store in a database, which they then lose control of (or sell). The scale of collection and the ease with which it can be abused is what I'm getting at here.

Wrap everything in foil. Throw your phone away. Use the computer at the public library under a fake name on your library card. Become untraceable.

    Friday threads never fail:drunk:

I have never cared much about this but suddenly understand the sentiment after watching the recent John Oliver segment about how data brokers were selling the records of people who had visited family planning clinics.

With many states making noises about prosecuting people for things that are legal in another state but illegal in a resident's home state, I think it is a legitimate concern and thing to be aware of.

I'm already a little creeped out by its offer to share my driving habits with trusted insurance partners. But what is to, say, stop Texas from gathering the location data of people who visited certain types of establishments in Colorado, then target vehicles just inside the state border. If they don't have that tech now, they will soon.
