When you, or whomever, purchased the vehicle, they/you agreed to the terms of data collection for various reasons and it be shared with 3rd parties. There was literally a contract that was signed and agreed to. It also states that the data does not identify you or and personal information about your identity. Sure, the data/vehicle ID could theoretically be translated to the VIN and then it be translated to the owner, etc, but that would take the involvement of multiple parties, one of which is a govt agency. If you bought it used, then Toyota has no legal obligation to stop collecting data from said vehicle.

Dumb shit like this is how paranoid conspiracy theories start.

Is your argument that you want to be able to smuggle illegal substances into a state and don't want the state to be able to stop you?

Its really not that far fetched. The number of people that lose control of their smart home devices because AWS is down is hilarious. I wouldn't put it past programmers to assume that a vehicle will always have connectivity, and then make it dependent on that connectivity to run. Accidentally, even.

You have no fucking clue what you are talking about. There are FAR more privacy protections and civil ordnances to protect private citizens than there were in the 20's and 30's. Rhetoric like that is part of a real problem, it's disgusting, and here you are complaining about your rights being violated after you sign a contract to share your data.

If you rely on smart home devices and get bent out of shape when they don't work and have no backup, that's your own damn fault. There is no guarantee that your phone, smart home, etc not have failures.

Do you trust the current powers that be?

Do you trust every future powers that be that inherit all the data the previous ones collected?

Obviously. Now add your main transportation to that list. Oops, AWS is down, can't go to work. It isn't far fetched.

It doesn't matter if I trust them. I agree to them collecting some data, directly or indirectly associated with me. If I don't want them to have that data, I don't give it to them. Stop trying to make this into an authoritarian discussion about govt.

This data collection module and whatever servers are associated with it have nothing to do with the functioning of the vehicle. It will do everything besides update the Nav/Entune software with that module disabled, server down, etc. Do you really think that the server/system that collects data from these vehicles has never has an issue? Stop being so dense.

For anyone that’s interested.. I think I’ve been able to locate the telematics signal with my tektronics analyzer.

This weekend i plan on trying to disable the output. Ranging from invasive to non-invasive I will try:

    -disconnect antenna
    -dummy load on antenna
-fry the antenna (maybe just supply voltage to the antenna)
    -remove the transmitter (invasive)

if all else fails or i blow it up ill post instructions on bypassing the dcm. A few jumper wires will allow the right speaker and microphone to continue working even without the dcm installed. Just not certain about Bluetooth yet.

My point is that once collected, data doesn't go away, and that modern technology collects enormous amounts of data, and people don't seem to understand the scale of and ease with which it can be used.

Laws and companies can change. Entire governments can change. But they still have that data and can use it however they please.

Do you not think that if Hitler had a database of every single person who had bought a dreidel on Amazon he wouldn't have taken advantage of it?

I'm saying that as cars get ever more complicated dependencies get created that may not be obvious. Mostly as a joke, but honestly I can absolutely see a programmer fucking this up.

    Its happened on Teslas:
