Toyota Tacoma 2010 Prerunner V6 Wont Coast to stop

Help!!! My Tacoma recently started feeling like someone was braking and wont cruse to a stop? Checked my parking brake and nope not engaged. Brakes are clean and checked for sticking drum shoes and sticking pads. Changed the fluid in the transmission twice and still no help the truck feels even worse when the a/c is turned on even more drag was felt coming and going into 5th gear and coming out 5th? Maybe a sensor I just Dont know ??

 

What size engine in the runner ?
Maybe your truck is in limp home mode . Computer controlled transmissions need to be scanned

I tried taking it to the toyota dealership since no local shop could give me a correct diagnosis no check engine light or pending codes
dealership wanted to drop the tranny since they had no idea what was wrong with it

 

Thats strange and your post is unusual . Not many guys complain about coasting to a stop . These 4 litre trucks turn the injectors off when you lift your foot off the gas .
Have you tried throwing the truck in neutral at highway speeds ? Obviously do it on a secluded road to see if there is a difference

 

Its an unusually feeling that I havent felt before its almost like the truck was braking then will let off after you hit 20-ish and would it be safe to shift to netrual while on drive on a automatic ?

it wont do any damage to throw the transmission into Neutral
You mentioned changing the fluid . What did the bottom of the pan look like ?
Also , whats your mileage ?
Do you have a scanner

 

I dropped the pan twice and the bottom looked pretty clean other than the normal amount of metal on the magnets nothing seemed unusual a bit dark but all WS fluid runs dark. The milage on the tacoma has 213,000 and im running a scan gauge for this reason to check the trans temp

have you tried manually shifting the transmission through the gears both ways ...upshifting and downshifting ?

 

Yes manually I shifted from up and down to see where the shifting was occurring and i nailed it down to 4th gear to 5th and Coming out of 5th gear is where its more pronounced

 

There are issues with 5th gear but seldom do members here at Tacoma World suffer with them like you .
When you say no local shop could figure this out , did you mean a local transmission shop ?

 

Yes both local trans shops 2 to be correct and the local dealership wanted to drop the tranny since its nothing they have ever felt before

 

Throw your gear into neutral when you’re cruising to a stop. That should tell you if it’s the engine/transmission, or if it’s the brake system

 

I agree with the local transmission shop . You may have a bind up inside the transmission . More diagnostics need to be performed for us to get to this conclusion though .
These transmissions have a torque converter with a clutch inside .
We need to determine if the converter clutch releases properly . Brake tap test would be the next logical step .
How to perform a brake tap test ? its in that link I provided in post # 4
Pay very close attention to the instructions for a brake tap test
Also try throwing the transmission into neutral and post back

hay im back on the tread ! But I preformed both tests shifted into neutral and its for sure the engine/transmission but no shudder when passing 40 or 45 mph, more like the engine hovers around 1k rpm. To be more descriptive when you let off the gas pedal the Rpms drop to 1k

We need to get more in depth to figure this out . I suggest breaking down every step in your explanation .
Dont think you need a replacement transmission just yet .

When you performed a brake tap test , did the torque converter unlock ?
What exactly happened when you put the truck into neutral when you were doing 65 Mph ?
I am thinking more along the lines of a plugged catalytic converter but as mentioned , we have to diagnose this
Long distance keyboard diagnostics can be a pain and can lead to misdiagnosis if not careful .

 

I think so since i didn't feel any-kind of shudder going down the road it shifts smoothly up aside from the slight thump that is felt when going into 5th gear when i placed the truck on 65 mph and let it coast it coasted normally ! no hiccups none like when the truck was placed on drive so its not brakes or e-brake its something within the drive train ----U-Joints were recently replaced on thinking that was the problem
