...^^^... "Holy Shit" comment post above made me laugh :D

This thread keeps coming back from the dead ... and I see this member with 2 posts has stopped posting for now.

The life of most mechanical items (i.e. engines) is good lubrication without dirt and contamination & break-down in the lubricants.

With that said ... I think it is a miracle that the transmission lasted that long and it must have had a lot of "highway miles" without a lot of shifting.

290,000 miles on a transmission with city driving and original transmission fluid would be very rare, IMO.

FWIW (embarrassed to say this) ... I bought my step-daughter a new Camry in about 2000 and she took off with it for about 2 years.

When I finally saw the car again, it had over 56,000 miles and the hood looked like it had never been popped, IMO.

The engine was still running ok with very little oil in it and much sludge could be seen via the oil fill cap opening.

I spend 2 days flushing the transmission and trying to clean the fuel system and changing the oil & filter several times.

The car was saved and lived another day to be driven by another person.

I was lucky, and the older Toyotas seem to have this ability to take a beating and keep on running ... not so sure that the new Toyotas are that tough.

One time I fell off the second story of a building and narrowly missed landing on the water main. I think we both got pretty lucky. :hattip:

I see nowhere in my 2013 owners manual (auto/2wd) to "flush" the transmission fluid. I see it should be "inspected" at 60k/90k/120k....

The only "flush" I see is a coolant flush at 100k

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead for my first post. Just rolled 100K on the clock for my 2015. Getting the transmission service scheduled this week.....nothing like a good fluid change to make you sleep better at night lol.

I did a full flush at 125k. No regrets. Dropped the pan and changed the filter and cleaned the magnets also.

This. I look at the transmission fluid Change interval from a broad perspective. Toyota has been progressively revising the interval since 2005... With that in mind I chose to apply the most stringent current recommendation (60k). I do a lot of off-road work so there is no reason not to. Most fluids in a vehicle should be changed periodically. Power steering, brake, coolant, engine oil, transmission oil, diff oil, all of it should be changed periodically.

So many folks here are slaves to a 5k oil change (with a synthetic no less!) and the turn around and say “transmission! Hell just leave that stuff in there for 300k!”

I was just quoted by a local Toyota dealership $260 bucks for a "flush" which I verified as being a true flush and not a multiple drain/refill. Seems steep and I'll get another quote from a different dealership, but I'll fall on the sword if I have to.

I bumped it to get some opinions on price, flush/drain fill, etc. But if you want to be snarky I also bumped your mom and sister last night.

I had two guys I trust tell me to leave it alone and two I trust more tell me they were idiots. I dont know what my truck has been through- drove ok but felt a little notchy going from 2 to 1 at low low speeds. I drained and filled. Manual trans 2006 with 137k and no records (according to toyota owners site and non of the paper records I received stating it had been done). Driven a couple hundred miles and it feels smoother to me, but I'm not that finely calibrated either...

I'm getting some weird feedback from my truck lately. Just got u joints, wheel bearings and now ring/pinion replaced. I'm having my mechanic flush the radiator, front diff and transmission as long as he has the truck, it's at just over 100k. I just heard back that the gear ratio that they took off the truck was slightly different than what the VIN suggested it should be and that the tranny fluid looked pretty dirty. I don't know wtf is going on with this truck, I rarely use it for actual truck purposes, had both diff oil changed at around 80k, and never got any indication that the transmission was in want of service.

Any tips on preventative driving or maintenance strategies going forward? I bought this thing clean 5 years ago with 56k on it planning to pass it on to the kids in ca. 2027. This has been my first truck and 4*4 experience so I'm trying to learn as I go and treat it all as a learning opportunity.
