It's not the 'visible' rust they're looking for. It's the rust that you can't see that's the problem. The frames are rusting from the inside out......

Everything rusts on the outside - doesn't necessarily mean its structurally compromised.

Yes - My 2007 frame was replaced. To look at it from the outside, it looked flawless. They were able to poke a 2-3" hole right thru it on the inside of the frame rail under drivers door. That's what they're concerned about.

Bought it used in '11, so I have no idea if it was sprayed. Are you referring to spraying at the recent inspection?

Yeah, they had something called a limited service campaign (LSC), that ended 3/31/16 and all 05-08 should have either been replaced or sprayed.

Maybe you aren't in a state that qualifies for the spray, only inspection.

I guess so. I'm in SC, but the truck was originally titled in Wisconsin. This all gives me some hope, though.

I traded my 2009 DCLB SR5 due to the fact it was starting to rust the sides of frame below the door had rust spot all over them and at the rear it was rust at the welds, I took it in for the leaf spring inspection and asked the service writer about the frame, he said they only warrantied them up to 2008, the truck was fine mechanically and the body was rust free just the frame had what I thought was an unusual amount of rust, more than the 96 regular cab, the 2002 DC, or the 2006 Tundra. I wonder if I will get a notice about.

This is old news, on the 2 gen form a huge thread on frame replacement stories, some good some horrible. Back in 2014 took my 2 gen in for an oil change and they did a frame inspection and it failed. The frames were rusting from the inside out. They order a new frame for each truck that fails. They replace the frame, drive shaft, leaf springs, front lower arms and a bunch of other stuff. It took 10 months to get the new frame, some have waited over a year. Some dealers were great in comping other mods like clutch replacements, etc while the truck was apart. Some dealers ripped people off by charging for new suspension parts they so called had to cut off.

After my frame replacement, the truck had the Tacoma vibration that wasn't there before. They also did a shitty job overall with the front panel asssembly. Never put the snaps in. Anyway I traded it in on my current 3rd gen.

    Wow.

So when should I expect a letter from TOYOTA about my 09?

If it's anything like the leaf springs I'll get a new frame in 2019.

Just traded in my 09, I made out on a buy back to get the 09. Wonder how I would have faired had I not traded. Oh well I guess I'll keep enjoying my new one. Moving forward I will need to pay attention, particularly the maintenance cost I read someone mention. If they don't do something for those that take care of the frame, what's the insentive to do it?

Speaking of frame maintenance if they are rusting from the inside out, what is the best preventative. Will a oil based type spray stop this, undercoating I would think if never ever compromised would, but once there is a crack who knows.

3rd gen will likely do it as well unless the actual metal composition was changed like some members have discussed on this issue. With this new wave we are now past the year range that was supposedly fixed. Its pretty sad they cannot figure out how to build a major component like a frame. All we can do is recognize its a major weak point on our trucks and be proactive.

With all the leafspring failures and now the payout for the frames my glimmer of hope for the Air Injection system to be covered is fading away...
