Funny your comment about did they tell him about the button?
I rented a fully loaded Jeep wagoneer or something like that last Christmas in Texas. It had one of those keys that's not a key, it just looks like an alarm remote. You stick it in this giant keyhole and turn it just like a real key, wouldn't it have been easier to use a real key? Anyway leaving a market the key fob/alarm was dead, would not unlock the door. I'm thinking great now what do I do. Went back in the store and bought a battery and kept the receipt. When I turned in the car I gave them the receipt for four dollars or whatever it was, and the guy say's to me, "that was stupid, why didn't you just pull out the hidden key in the remote." How the hell am I to know that if you don't tell me about this. I screamed and yelled at that guy for two minutes for talking to me like that. "I'm sorry, they should have told you," duh.

No disrespect to any 19 year vet intended. I have a patrolman and a special agent in my family. If the guy on the phone was the BIL than that's good. If the vehicle was malfunctioning electronically than there's probably nothing to do but bend over and kiss your ass good bye. Makes me angry that people died and that some little girl or boy isn't gonna see mommy or daddy again. Makes me angry that ass clowns like you feel the need try and put people in their place when you have no idea what they have been through, or what actually happened. Why don't you shut your mouth and stop trying tell people what to say and how to feel.

DON'T ASK! lalala. Someone in a 5 letter county is likely running out to put the rubber mat under the cloth one and not get the point at all.

(edit) I'm sure Monarch meant in place of lol, we know what he meant

I think this only applies to the rubber "all weather" mats... and then only if they're not installed properly - without using the retaining clips and/or on top of the regular carpeted mats or some other mats. It's not a problem AT ALL if they're installed properly in the correct position and secured by the retaining clips. THIS is what the dealerships will be checking for with this recall.

I have the all-weather mats in my '09 - and the driver's side mat can't get ANYWHERE NEAR the accelerator pedal. There's a HUGE cut-out in it under/around the accelerator... to the point were the mat doesn't do any good in that area. Any sand/mud on your right foot or the pedal misses the mat completely and ends up right on the carpet. Brilliant.

When I bought my truck, the salesman handed me the mats in a bag as I was leaving the dealership and I installed them myself later - with the retaining clips. I suppose a lot of people might have just thrown the clips in the trash and tossed the mats in the truck without them - where they could slide up under the pedal and cause this problem.

My wife drives an '07 Camry which is also affected by this recall - but it has properly-installed carpeted mats with retaining clips. Neither of our vehicles will be going to the dealership for this "problem". Ridiculous.

I can understand the transmission not downshifting at 120 mph, the ecu is not going to let you blow the engine, but not shifting into neutral ? I remember when I was a kid I was driving with my dad on the highway he was going about 75 mph and I accidentally hit it in neutral, my dad quickly pulled over on the side shoulder before we figured out what had happened. I sat in the back for the rest of the trip. Sorry about what happened to the fam.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it say (on the OEM all weather mats) not to put the OEM all weather mats on top of the existing floor mats?

My heart goes out to the family. This was a terrible accident that clearly could have been avoided. From what I've read so far, one key point at least to me was that the vehicle this family was in was not familiar to them. Instead of jumping for joy over the possiblity of new floor mats. Think about that rental car you pickup from the airport next time? Bottom line, we should try to learn something from this. The one thing I know for sure is there's nothing wrong with my all weather floor mats and I've NEVER had this problem. I throw this one out there for all. How about an electrical problem?

Don't worry, they'll replace your custom mats with $5 mats from China. :D But you'll be safe.

Hmm I have Husky mats ontop my OEM floor mats.

Haven't had any issues! In fact, maybe that's been my saving grace?

Did you not read the story? There were FLAMES coming from the wheel wells. He WAS pushing the brakes to the floor and it didn't help. I posted before that something similar happened to me in a friends 4-cyl Altima. I had a tough time bringing the car to a stop with that weak engine and it wasn't at full throttle.

The car in question had a much more powerful engine and it was running all out. A car like that (and probably trucks like ours) can overpower the brakes with the engine. And the longer it goes, the worse it gets while the brake pads wear down.

First of all, that sounds like a terrible idea. That can't be good for your brakes, your engine or your transmission. Second, it's different when you're car is at a complete stop. If you really wanted to test your little theory (and NOBODY should do this, of course) you'd go out onto an empty interstate, get up to interstate speeds, THEN floor your accelerator for a few seconds (b/c surely it took a few seconds to realize something was wrong) and then brake to see which one wins.

IMO, all who have their floormats in wrong posing a potential risk to others on the road should have their keys confiscated, vehicle auctioned off & be given a ride home from the dealer with a shiny new bicycle that doesn't require the use of floormats.

I'm not sure if this has been covered in this thread yet but I called Toyota today to see if I qualified and they told me that only certain VIN numbers were being recalled. I was also told that Toyota hasn't released any recalls and this was only a campaign (whatever that means). The service guy there also told me that they would only be replacing the driver side floormat. I have a feeling this guy may have been misinformed but if anyone would like to call their local dealer and confirm this it would be nice.
