I looked at my Taco the other day. My floormat doesn't come anywhere near the gas pedal. With the hooks in the mat, I really can't see how this could happen. There is like a 1/2" space between the top of my mat and the bottom of the gas. I couldn't get my mat to move up if I wanted it to.

Will be intersting to see how they fix it. I can't imagine that they will just tell you to use the right mat. I would think it would be a pedal re-design, or something on that nature.

I just called Toyota and the dealership told me they had no clue what action was going to be taken... What's the point in a recall without telling your service people what's going on? Unbelievable....

They might not know. I mean I know tons of people that throw an all weather mat from Walmart on top of the stock ones just for the winter. Hell I even do it. Never had any problem though. So you gotta figure this will take some time to figure out.

I feel my gas clip the mat on the way up all the time, I always wonder if this was an issue.

    of course
    Ok, hypothetical.....

So I am driving down the road and my Taco accelerates out of control, oh my, what to do?

    1. Firmly depress the brake
    2. turn off the ignition
    3. put vehicle in Neutral

My guess is that the vehicle will stop. If not, there must be gremlins about.

Hmm do you think they will have a recall on 1988 Toyota Supras as well? Mine does this all the time!

I just push in the clutch and kick the gas pedal!

They haven't officially announced a recall because they don't have an answer yet. It's more of an announcement at the moment to get the word out that they don't want you to use your mats. All the news headlines are saying it b/c they don't know any better.

Its different with tire blowouts, few have had em and we all know a bit what to do, same with ice, countersteering. We can understand people's stories.

Now in 2009 ... "Hey , what do we do in case of floor mats?" Then the bumper stickers, "floor mats dont kill people, people kill people" and finally: felony possesion of floor mats!

Very funny wise guy, But anyway I went to the dealer today and they let me look at the official release in which they were given and basically redraider is right except for the prisus part it was a lexus. It was a loaner car that had two sets of floor mats on the drivers side and it caused the pedal to get jammed.

Toyota at this time is not offering new floor mats or any solution other than at this time to put out an advisory to either A) take out your floor mat altogether or B) ensure that your mat is properly secured with the hooks.

Hopefully by next week we know more but its seems more like a 'make sure the mats are in properly warning' not an actual "recall".

(This was according to a dealer in Toronto, so not some dealer out of an igloo, cause i know that comment would be next)

    hope that helps a bit
    Cheers!

I called my local dealer and inquired what the issue was also. They said it boiled down to people stacking mats on top of mats and the top mat not being secured by the hooks. If you have one mat and it's attached to the hooks, it doesn't sound like an issue.

I asked my mom the same question when she would turn her mats upside downwith the rubber side up. She said she didn't want to get the fabric dirty or staind. Clean floor mats help the resale she said. Yeah I know, I explained to her that floor mats are there so the interior of the car does not gets dirty and I bought her all weather ones for her Tundra. So in regards to your question, since it was a rental maybe he didn't want to charged a cleaning fee or something, and if the rental car company put them there then they should be the ones at falt for this not Toyota, oh I interviewed for the new tacoma plant they are opening here in San Antonio yesterday hope i get it

    agreed

-when I was 13 my aunt was driving us around in my family's Astro van and gunned it to get around traffic and exit an offramp, well the accelerator stuck, I quickly reached down and pulled the pedal up

-put it neutral or something :(

I feel bad for the family.

    hahahahahahaha!:)

clean floor mats help the resale value? that sounds insane. just buy more or take $50 off your asking price

i still want to hear a report saying why he didn't put it in neutral. i want to know if he didn't think about it or he couldn't for some reason

How do they not know what mats are causing the problem and why aren't they just handing out the hooks that attach the mat to the floor? Is it just the cloth mats? Do the TRD rubber mats have this problem? Any info from Toyota besides we're looking into it would be great....

Neither. I have two pet beavers named Frank and Tubuchuohochuck and they are trained to jump in the truck when the parking lamps flash. They proceed to flatten their bodies against the floor on the driver side and passenger side carpets and use their claws to remain in place. They are not only attractive but are effective foot warmers and save me gas since I can turn down the thermostat in the truck due to their added body heat.

I heard some Texans on this site tried that with Armadillos.
    Tragic.
