The Feds are saying that it might be more than the mats. I believe it might be something else too. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved soon.

Ya its got to be something more than the floor mat. How did they prove that it had anything to do with the floor mat anyway? Was the mat still pushing the throttle after the accident?

I hope it's not a problem with the "drive by wire" throttle control.

It probably is related to the electronic throttle or they would be recalling every Toyota ever made. The floor mats in my Tacoma are installed better than the ones in my 1994 Corolla (the Tacoma has hooks). JMO.

I didn't give this recall a second thought. But just for shits and giggles I thought I'd take a closer look, as my '09 with all-weather mats falls within the recall notice. My mats are installed correctly, fastened securely with the hooks and not placed over the carpeted mats. They're no where near the the pedals. I just can't see how they would ever be an issue as long as they are installed the right way.

My AW mats came with new hooks (to be safe) and clear instructions NOT to place them on top of the carpeted mats. I just don't get it. Is this a recall for dummies? Or am I missing something.

All vehicles are going to be recalled in America until each driver shows they know how to go into neutral.

(driver) Halp! my truck is stuck at w.o..t. !
    (passenger) Really? crap do somtin!
    (driver) WHAT?
(passenger) uh hmm uh, hey ,try pushin in the clutch (autos use the lever)
(driver) wow! it worked, they should make a certified expert double professional driver course for this secret idea.

I tested my GF. She said she would pull into the curb! WTF! She's a very smart girl (4.0 at Notre Dame). No accidents. Can fix things. Goes off road ...And the best indicator of her intelligence, she's with me! ;) She now knows neutral and or the key.

i doubt it has to do with the throttle. if it did they would have said that immediately. i do hate the fly by wire system though. i hate having my car controlled by a bunch of computers. makes me very uncomfortable

i tested my GF too. she looked at me like i was a retard and said "put it in neutral. duh." apparently she is more than just a sex hole that cooks :)

So I decided to improperly install my all weather mats. I left the hooks in, but installed the rubber mat on top of the trd carpet mats. Still, I do not see how it can get stuck. The hooks hold the mats in place and the pedal is far enough away from the mat it doesn't even touch.

Has anyone been contacted by Toyota? What do they intend to do? I have the Toyota carpet mats w/hooks no problems. I emailed them but no reply yet.

Here is some food for thought:

    1) Sometimes, when I am approaching a stop and I go to press on the brake - the edge of my right foot catches the accelerator, thus depressing it and making it harder to stop. This mostly happens when I’m wearing work boots or shoes that are wider than what I usually drive in. As such, when I wear those types of shoes, I have to make a conscience effort to move my foot more deliberately than usual from the gas to the brake.

    2) I’d be interested to know if investigators looked at this as a possible cause of the accident OR if they looked into any loose items in the vehicle that could have rolled under the brake pedal (such as a dropped cell phone, a loose golf ball, etc.). Something under the brake could have caused the vehicle NOT to stop too.

As a reminder to us all, secure the crap you have in your vehicle and help reduce the risk of something happening.

    3) Something else that I’ve noticed from day 1 of ownership… When I am decelerating and happen to hit a pothole, I hear a quick ‘groan’ (for lack of better words to describe it) from my Taco and it seems as if it stops braking for just a split second because of the bump. This ONLY happens when I am stopping and I hit a bump of some kind. Perhaps this could also have been the cause.

Buddy of mine has a new tundra - he had this happen twice to him before he figured out it was the mat causing it. He just kept bashing the gas pedal to see if that would cause the acceleration to stop. He's a good driver so I know he wasn'[t just being a moron about it.

Apparently people taking their cars in to a car wash can end up having the mats get removed for the wash, then replaced, without the hooks being paid any attention too.

It's definitely a real problem. Toyota should just buy everyone a set of weathertechs and call it a day.

Agreed! my weathertechs solve the issue completely by going under the gas and break and around it. They're brilliant for a million reasons. I was having the sliding issue with my old cloth mats as well as the shitty all weather mats (wore a hole in those within 6 months.. toyota said it was "normal wear and tear"....)

    Hello, all
Just picked up a 2010 double cab/sport with JBL last night. The recall said just to remove the driver's mat but nothing about a replacement or anything. You think dealer will take the whole set back?

Also is it normal that the mats say "TRD Offroad" on the mats even though mine is a TRD Sprot, not a TRD Offroad? Can someone confirm?

    Thanks

The dealer probably did some mat swapping and you ended up with the wrong ones.

I have a new '09 TRD Sport and my floor mats only read "TACOMA".

You do not have to get rid of the drivers side mat. Just make sure it is always hooked on the floor hooks. If you remove it you'll just mess up the carpet eventually.

My '07 4Runner has the exact same mats (and gas pedal) and they are NOT being recalled by Toyota.

So you received your truck with the wrong floor mats installed?

I would offer it up for auction on EBay.

It ranks right up there with religious visions in pizza dough.
