Toyota to recall 3.8million vehicles (Tacoma too)

this just sounds like an excuse to me...this could happen to pretty much any car. "my flip flop got caught on the gas pedal and I crashed" old navy is now recalling 100million black flip-flops due to someone who cant drive.

 

I agree. I hate to judge a person's actions in a high stress situation that I have not been in, but I would hope that I would just slap the vehicle into neutral, kill the ignition or move the mat. That's scary stuff.

 

so why aint they recalling the 2006?

Panic. I had a return spring break on an old truck with a carb, the throttle stuck wide open. I shifted it into neutral, got to the side of the road and shut it off. The article said the guy had MINUTES, he totally blew it. We had the same type incident happen here. The guy had his family in the car, the wife had time to call 911. The Police and Sheriff's Office cleared the intersections on the highway and a patrol unit intercepted him, got in front of him and used the patrol car to stop the car. It was amazing work by the local law enforcement. When interviewed, the guy said he hadn't thought about shifting the car out of gear. First rule in an emergency: don't panic, keep your head.

In a situation like that, could you shut the car down by shifting into neutral and removing the keys?

 

So is this for Canadians too? Or are our mats different?

 

It doesn't say anything about replacing the mats... simply removing them entirely. Which, kinda bothers me that they might throw my mat away should I be at the dealer for anything. That would anger me immensely. There is absolutely no reason the mat should interfere with the peddle unless you're a moron with driving. I'd think most of the 4 wheeling this forum does it'd show up at the extreme angles long before a wreck.

 

shift into neutral and you wouldnt need to shut the car down. You can then brake to stop the car. then hopefully figure out that all you have to do is move the floormat to bring the R's down.

Shift it into neutral, but don't try to remove the keys until you have got it stopped or off the road. If you remove the keys, your steering wheel is going to lock. The engine is just going to bounce off the rev limiter anyways, not that it matters in a life or death situation.

 

you never want to take the keys out while the vehicle is moving. that can cause the steering wheel to lock and you wont be able to turn....put in neutral and turn it off to keep from reving the hell out of the engine
