Best thing to do in that situation is to put the trans in nuetral. Worst case is you blow up the engine. If you turn off the ignition, you may lock the steering and take away vaccuum from the brakes. I'm going to remind my wife and daughter of this tonight when I get home. That 911 call was chilling.

OKAY so i called toyota.. for the recall, theyre having people come in and they're double checking that the ones with all weather mats dont have the all weather mats ON TOP of the carpet mats. If you do, they install them "properly" and then give you back your carpet mats to store elsewhere. THAT and if you have just regular mats that you're using the clippy thingies.

..I think this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Are we really recalling cars becuase we cant figure out how to use the little clippy thingies?

EDIT: But yah, when i asked "new mats then?" they said "nope, just making sure you're using your carpet clips"

Like I said, this happened to me last week. Thank God I was able to kick the hell out of the accelerator and it became unstuck. My heart was racing a while after the engine stopped racing.

I suppose I shouldn't disclose this here but I am working with Toyota and I'm working on writing the TSB and... well... hmmm, well... ...let's just say it will include these:

Cutting off pieces of the mats? You gotta be kidding? Feedback for Toyota Management: This is going to piss off customers beyond their obvious comprehension.

I wouldn't doubt if the cure is a redesigned accelerator pedal(s) and removal of the subwoofer... something like this:

The recall will just be an idiot check to make sure the mats are installed correctly. Of course if you read the manual it says not to put mats on top of already installed mats. The dealer that loaned the car that killed the family screwed up if that’s what happened. Someday we’ll all pay the price, like with the tire sensors, by having to pay for idiot proof mats that cost $500.
