A Lexus accelerator pedal stuck and the crash killed a family in Santee, CA at the end of a freeway off ramp. A passenger was on the cell phone with 911 when it happened. The Lexus was driven by a CHP officer... apparently there was nothing a well trained professional could do to stop or slow the car! I believe it was a loaner from the dealership, which would make him less familiar with it than his own vehicle, I suppose? Good responce from Toyota... For the record, my '05 Tacoma 4X4, with almost 100,000 miles on it, has NEVER had an issue with the floor mats.

Thanks for the reminder about just shifting into neutral...forgot about the systems shutting down if the key was removed.
I had rubber mats over the factory mats a couple years back, and the dealer removed them and said they could cause this exact problem....this was 2 years ago. I have Weather Tech's now. Mine are cut out in the area of the gas petal, but I've noticed one's on here that are not. Are the non cut out one's an older version?

I'm so sad for all the people that died, but if my accelerator was stuck, I would...

    1) reach down to the pedal to see if something was holding it down and remove the obstuction, or
    2) put the car in neutral, or
    3) turn the ignition key off (so what if the power assist is gone - its an emergency situation), or
    4) ebrake, or
    5) reach under dash and rip out all the wiring I could grab with my hand, or
    6) f-n slam the gear lever into any other gear, including reverse.

I rather have a shot at survival by attempting to control the car once disrupted, over just letting the damn thing fly free at 120 mph into oncoming traffic. but thats just me.

First thing I did when I bought my truck was rip those stock mats out. Purchase the husky linears, they are wicked mats, perfect for mud/snow, the linears have an added edge on them to stop mud and water going under your seats or carpet, you just have to dump them from time to time.

I gotta say that I do not believe this is the cause of all unexpected acceleration problems in the Tacoma. When it happened to me I was completely stopped at a red light and the engine suddenly went to full throttle. I have the factory TRD heavy rubber floor mats that are held in place by 2 hooks. The floor mat was flat on the floor with both hooks attached when I had the problem.

That pretty much covers my thoughts on this thread.
One guy is bummed because he thought his '06 Tacoma wasn't included in a recall. Why would you want your vehicle included in a safety recall? :smack:
People are asking the same questions over and over. READ the thread. :frusty:
It's like watching a bunch of 6 year old Ritalin users spinning in circles looking for a fix.

Click here >>>Toyota/Lexus Consumer Safety Advisory<<< and read it.
When you're done, read it again.

This recall is insane! My 2010's mats are anchored by hooks and can not move.I am not driving all the way to the dealer for him to inspect to see if my mats are hooked or not.No offense but that cop was an idiot who did'nt use his brain and he was the one that killed himself and those other people.........not the freakin floor mats!

I also feel terrible for the family. I hate hearing the 911 call...it's chilling to know they died seconds later.

Although I think calling 911 was probably not the right thing to do. I can't even imagine being in that situation or what I would do. BUT, if you have mind to pull out your phone and call 911, you should probably have the mind set to work on a solution. Or find a safer place to ram the car into (water, a field, a guard rail, etc).

My condolences for their loved ones :(

That's a shame that it happened.... It must have put him into shock. I've had it happen to me before in my car.... I was hard on the brakes, I couldn't stop it. After about 50 feet I just shifted into neutral, before the car could rev, I turned the key and shut the car off..... I'm not trying to criticize but why not turn the key off?

I believe this will be the case. As it is currently my floor mat hooks swivel. I think revised non moving clips will be installed.

Mines never got stuck. Although my mats are full of tears and my retainer is tearing my carpet. I could use some mats and a new truck. I've got the factory rubber mats and man they are crap. I need to get some weather tech mats. I just don't know if I want to pay that.

I just listened to the 911 call. It sounds like he had time and was calm, wonder why he couldn't put it in N, put on the emergency brake, or slam it into reverse or low or turn it off as the 911 operator suggested. It's a terrible thing to happen and I guess it's easy to second guess while I'm watching TV and typing.
