Toyota TRD OEM lift kit

I’ve never gotten 18/22mpg since I drove it off the lot. I don’t do much highway driving. I didn’t notice any drop off in mpg with the lift. I would think that tires would effect it more than a lift.

 

How much of this kit is the OEM grille and tss sensor and cover? Bc shocks and blocks are usually cheap.

 

So for those of us in Canada, I called my local dealer and spoke to the parts guy and he says he is able to order the parts in Canada. He's showing 12 on back-order coming from the US going to the Vancouver warehouse. He quoted me prices of each component and with some quick mental math, it's coming in around $2000CAD+taxes+install. It's pretty pricey and I'll see if I can source this part myself and see what shipping/exchange rate would come out to.

He said he did some training in Alberta and knows some dealers are selling new Tacomas with aftermarket lift-kits and when he asked them about warranty, it seems that the dealer will just eat the costs themselves so it's very dealer dependent on whether or not they will warranty aftermarket lifts. He mentioned that at his dealership, they won't install aftermarket lifts for that very reason.

Warranty is important to me since this is my daily and will spend a large portion of its life on pavement with the occasional weekend trip off-road. I plan to keep this truck as long as possible (or until my kid outgrows the backseat). I'll still cross-shop aftermarket lifts but there's something to be said about peace of mind.

Edit: I can order off eBay and have it shipped to my door for $1825CAD all-in (shipping and import charges included). Saves me about $400. Looks like the OEM headlights will have to wait.

 

Ooof! That's tempting me. I've already got a lift kit installed that I'm happy with. Just wish my 2018 TRD OR came with a front facing camera to stuff into that hole

 

Honestly man it sounds like you have enough use for a quality suspension set up to justify going the route you outlined with headstrong and getting the kit from them including add a leafs and everything. I definitely think it's worth finding out if that issue of possible damage from preloaded shocks is a concern or not first because if I'm wrong and it's designed well to work with your stock coils then you have 2 good options.

For the record I went through headstrong and I bought OME nitrocharger shocks and 887 coils with a Deaver single add a leaf in the back and I've been very happy with it. It was definitely an improvement over stock.

 

Hey guys, I'm really interested in doing this because I want to retain my factory warranty at all costs. I got a quote for 2000 in labor and 1200 for the kit. I am just wondering from the guys who have gotten it done what did you pay for labor?

 

Im installing my kit tomorrow morning and moving to the tire size that you have. I like how the truck looks over all now with the kit and tire size.

 

Perfect! I like the kits Headstrong have. I've used All-Pro Offroad for a SAS for an old 87 Toyota Pickup, and feel I will get the same good quality from Headstrong.

One thing I want to ask, I am not sure what you mean by "preloaded shocks". When I ask dealership that, what am I looking for exactly when they answer?

Last question here, recommend 885 or 887 coils?

Edit: I don't want to have to get upper control arms if that helps determine which Coil set.

I wonder if these would fit on my 2014. At the lowest setting I should get around 1.5" lift I'd imagine.

 

I'm not sure exactly how you should word it but here's what I mean by pre loading the shocks.



If you look at this picture of bilstein 5100s (from google) you see that there are multiple notches to put the lower spring perch on. Which one you use determines how much lift you get. The reason for these notches is so you can use stock length coils to lift the vehicle, otherwise you would change the shock and your truck would be the same height, because the coils support the truck and determine the height, not the shocks. By raising the spring perch on the shock, you can raise the whole position of the coil which in turn lifts your truck. The sacrifice there, is that your shock shaft will be extended more in a resting state than it would be if you left it stock or used longer coils. The longer coils make it so you can get lift without reducing the travel range of the shock shaft.

So that's what I mean by pre loaded. Sorry if I've been redundant or obvious with that explanation. Again I don't know exactly how to word it, but you're trying to find out where the additional height that the lift gives you is coming from. If it's coming from putting your stock coils on a spring perch that extends the shock shaft, then that's the same scenario as with 5100s and stock coils and would have all the risks we've been talking about already. If the way it lifts the truck is because the shock body is longer then that's a different story because then you'd retain the full range of travel on the shock shaft. I hope this helps.

 

Man, that was perfect. I understand the 'why' now. I was thinking the shock was going to come preloaded with something. I'm on board now. I wonder if they have that info? When I called the dealership, they didn't know the kit existed. So they may not have that detailed info? I will give them a call once more to check that out.

 

I just got off the phone with a dealership, and the “ parts guy” informed me that the kits are currently on recall due to some bad nuts? He didn’t elaborate...... so y’all that already have them on you may want to double check things under there. April 1st is the date tentatively that kits will be good to go. He didn’t state if it was a problem on every kit or some.

 

Just got off the phone with my local dealership and they said it's a 3hr calibration, and will run about $360. I spoke with the foreman of the shop, not the guy that prices everything. So pretty good ballpark for a starting point.

 

I talked to the foreman of the shop, and he said they do come with multiple notches. So, like we have been talking about, the shock is extended further and reducing travel range. I'm a sucker, or an idiot, either way, I do like this lift. Unless someone can think of an absolute reason to not go that route, I think I am going to go with this kit, then snag the longer coils and AAL from Headstrong. With adding a leaf, I shouldn't need more than the one leaf if wanting to keep the truck level, right?

Yeah, I'm spending a bit more money this route, but it's my first new truck in 15 years, and is my second truck. I'm going to splurge a bit

 

The one I took pics of in which thread I don’t remember cause there are multiple now that being said measurements I took are like 2” front lift rear 1” block. Change out for aal IMO your good. Just my 2cents.

 

No worries man, I definitely don't consider it a dumb option at all. I have to say however that I can't be certain that using longer coils on the lowest perch with those TRD bilsteins will be the same as it is with bilstein 5100s.

 

This kit looks interesting to me too. I have been going around with what I would like to do with my 19. Currently it has a spacer in the front which sits it level. Thought about the Pro stuff or going to King or Fox, but I like the idea of this one at a better price point, especially considering I'll never use the truck hard enough to worry about the King/Fox coilovers. Fire roads, easy to moderate trails, no rough and hi speed. I've had plenty of really modified stuff in my life, I like the idea of the factory parts that are decent quality and put the height and ride where I want it.

So, here's my 2cents about the front sensor. As I said, mine is up an inch in the front. I also have a Pro (faux) grill, and a marginally larger tire (265/70/17). I put it all together carefully, but I have never had the transponder calibrated and it works fine. This morning I was on the freeway for two hours using cruise and the adaptive speed control works perfectly. It maintains proper interval, reacts appropriately to slowing traffic or a lane change, and speeds up at a normal rate. I don't know if the windshield camera also is calibrated, but mine seems to work fine as far as lane departure. (I have never used the hi beam function). You may want to try it out first and see how it's affected before spending the money to calibrate it if you are doing the install yourself.

I imagine, these units have some flexibility due to the suspension movement of the vehicle and road variables. If it acted off at all, I would have it calibrated, but it has been like this for a year and a half and has some road trips on it where the TSS functions have acted as they did the day I took it home.

Just one guy's opinion, your mileage may vary.

 

Adding to the above. I added an OEM Pro grille to my OffRoad, which lowers the sensor a few inches and it’s never given me a single blip of a problem. And I simply moved the sensor from one grille to another. I figure if I’m going to add this lift, it will put my sensor back at OEM height for my OR.
