If parts are obsolete or unavailable for an extended amount of time would a franchised dealership ever put in a younger or equal mileage component in vehicle?

Would they then cover that component under any existing warranty? Or is this not normal?

Asking about a transfer case, transmission.

They will use remanufactured, not used. If it is a component that has a core value, they will always use it instead of new even if your truck is two days old. If a component has no core, like a headlight or a bumper or a heater switch, they will use new. Hope this helps.

There are cases where they will take a part off a showroom car or a new car instock to replace a back ordered part. But only if its something that has to be done right now.

Wouldnt it be better just to provide a rental if it was that big of a deal? I dont think they would go pulling off parts from a vehicle from the factory because then that dealer would have to warranty that repair and not get the kick back from Toyota. Plus the time to uninstall, install then put a replacement back on the model. Doesn't make sense.

We did it for the difficult customers at VW, if they were a pain in the ass, we didnt want them in a rental, so we pulled the part from another car. Usually just had the new car department do the work since they were paid by the hour anyways.

Yea I can see that since it's minimal work, like...30 seconds to 2 minutes tops. But power train or electrical work; IDK just doesn't make sense to me. But it's not my line of business so I'll just cut it there.

Yeah, ive never seen it on a large thing like the OP mentions, but it does happen for smaller things... mainly trim.

Back in the 1980s my buddy had a Pontiac LeMans which was a rebadged Korean car of some sort. They took parts from other new cars to service his as there was some kind of strike going on in Korea and no new parts were available at that time.

That would explain why all VWs rattle and all the dash switches malfunction on a brand new car. Now I understand!

    Thanks!

"No problem found" was a hot key on the techs computers... I'm serious too.
