I wouldn't loan my neighbors truck for $300.. whats next, the ATF is testing ammunition and wants to borrow your guns??

Jk, this thread hadn't gotten as outrageous as I thought it'd be by now. I wouldn't do it, simply for the fact I don't want someone else abusing the things that I own. That being said, any testing they'd do wouldn't be any worse than the years of abuse I'd put on the truck; the difference being, I'd rather do it myself, because its mine. They have their own for this stuff.

I would have thought they could come up with something better than $300...

Clearly, nobody with any sense is in charge of this.

So you know right away, you're going to be handing your truck over to morons, and that they think you're stupid too.

"Lets sell them the truck for $50k, then ask them to borrow it for 2 weeks for dyno testing and give them $300"

Who really is this a good idea for?

That's what I would think. Maybe they want samples from different regions, climates, gas supply and driving styles of trucks that have already been in use? Or trucks from different production schedules.

Plenty of used 2024 trade ins at dealers. Why would they need personal vehicles when they can just obtain a previously-owned one from a Toyota dealer? That doesn't add up.

Yes it does because government emission departments like CARB don't want a vehicle that ''could'' be a ringer. Pulling one from the general population works to their advantage, especially if it's not in perfect running condition. Remember, lots of money in fines can be on the table if a government animal like CARB can show the vehicle model exceeds manufacturer mandated emissions.

Well at least they don't make it hard to game the system. Insert sarcasm face here.

And that trip would be off road and up the side of a mountain. All of the things you wondered if your truck will do shall now become known.

Judging from the comments here, I think there might be selection bias with these tests.

My theory is those with higher value vehicles that are operating normally are likely not to submit theirs. The 300 dollar reward and a rental vehicle for subjecting a high dollar vehicle to possible abuse simply isn't enough for a lot of people. That is probably why Toyota has volunteered to do the testing. They probably have the same concerns we do with unaccounted for EPA faceless people handling the tests. Also, it helps to insure those faceless people aren't deliberately conducting tests in a manner detrimental to its brand.

Those with low value vehicles, the reward to risk ratio might skew towards bringing theirs in. They might not be as invested in theirs, especially if it is leased, not functioning properly, or are wanting to get rid of it even though it is two years or newer. What I am getting at there is more likelihood they aren't as well maintained and as a result have higher emissions.

Just my two cents. I think whatever conclusions that come from these tests will be inherently flawed.

I would do it. Hell something happens to it which I highly doubt you will have a new Trailhunter. I highly doubt Toyota would let any happen to a customer vehicle.

I'll bet the dealers would have an objection to taking their inventory so they can't sell it for a while. With using a customer's vehicle they avoid lots of additional approvals at many levels and don't disturb anyone's rice bowl. All they have to deal with is one person desperate for $300.

You won't get a new vehicle. You'll get a repaired vehicle back unless the contract says you get a new vehicle if you don't like that dent they put in it or the stained seat, etc. Which you know it won't say.

Their insurance would probably low-ball the heck out of the truck.

Do it and ask for following:
    • Oil change
    • Alignment
Looks like they will “fix” anything they break.

Ask for a Tundra for a loaner.

    *I would do it.

*Disclosure: Toyota pays for my medical insurance.

I wouldn’t be comfortable with my Tacoma being out of pocket for that long. A lot more “could” go wrong than in my garage.

Being able to say our evening prayers in the garage together is worth way more than $300…

$300 for losing your truck for a few weeks? I mean, that's not even minimum wage... I'd politely laugh in their face.
