Just received a call from the dealership I bought from and service my 2020 at. They asked I come in today or tomorrow to have my frame scanned. They said it will take 15 mins and I'll get a $50 coupon for future service. I asked if I could have it done in a couple thousand miles when I bring it in for an oil change and she said no because they only have the equipment from Toyota until tomorrow.

Seems weird. Anyone else do this?

Did you ask why they want to scan it, and what kind of scan? I wonder if it will be another early rust issue, or the steel used was not up to standards, etc.

I’d ask for details as to what they’re looking for and why, it’s your right know.
Also, I’d ask why you were selected. Certain VIN, year, model, recent warranty work, etc?

50 bucks doesn't sound like good compensation for your time unless the stealership is 3 minutes down the road and you have nothing better to do.

If it's not too inconvenient I'd do it. They're trying to figure something out.. You'd be helping out the community

Sounds to me that Toyota is making an effort to see if the new coatings are working. Replacing frames cost them a lot of money and reputation

    Work in progress...
Seems more like a scam than a scan. Probably trying to sell you a new truck.

I am always skeptical when a dealer calls you.... on my second gen, I had some warranty work done on the deferential (2wd).
They gave me a free oil change upon my visit. I took it back for the oil change. They did the oil change and I left the dealership and went home. 2 hours later I get a call from the dealership asking for me to come back.o_Oo_O My first question was, Why????
Their answer was "we forgot that we need to check your deferential for more information."
o_Oo_O just sounded weird. So I pressed them and turns out they have my oil cap at the dealership. They ask for me to come back again to install the oil cap.
My answer. Nope, you screwed it up. The mechanic can drive up to my house and install it. I am not moving the truck without a oil cap.
They caved and the mechanic came to install the oil cap.
BTW, I have been black balled from this dealer, but that's a different story

^^This. There is always an ulterior motive when dealerships are involved. The only ones they watch out for are themselves.

Thanks for all the responses. I asked on the call what it's for and why it's so urgent and she couldn't give me the details. Of course. I'm definitely skeptical.

I'm in the northeast so yes, rust belt. Frame is in good condition with only some minor rust on some welds. My guess is they're using it as a sample to see how a 3 year old frame in the NE looks.

Dealership is 5 mins away and it's after work so really not a pain. I'll follow up on here after I get back.

You are going to have to take off of work?
Nothing done at the dealer is 15 minutes.... you spend at least 15 minutes with the service writer. What is your time worth???? 50$ or 4 hours worth of lost work time?

How did you read "after work" as "take off of work"?

They're just going to swing by the dealership on the way home. This really doesn't seem like a big deal and yall are huge babies. After work is the perfect time anyway because they all want to go home too.

Just stand there and watch them scan it for 15 minutes, chat to the tech and ask what's up. They'll probably spill the beans that service rep wouldn't.

    Honestly I'm not that curious.

If they can't tell me over the phone whether they are doing it as part of a post consumer study, or whether it's a targeted survey over a concern, or if it's just a weird way to get fresh bodies onto the showroom floor, then I immediately assume it's the latter.

Hey, come in, let me tie up your vehicle for an indeterminate amount of time, oh by the way, while I have your undivided hostage attention have you seen our new finance options for this shiny thing here?
