Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

I love Tacomas, the way they look and drive (4X4 only, not even sure why they bother making a 2wd) but I am very hard on my vehicles.

Since I am not going to get more than parting-out value for anything I own for more than 5 years, Why should I deal with an aftermarket of sellers who think their trucks are gold plated.

I budgeted 22k... _2-2-Thousand_ for a nice second gen used 4X4 stick under 100k miles and it's IMPOSSIBLE to find... (expected to come in closer to 10)... I can only buy from a dealership due to financing and I am F#@#ng tired of their b.s. but the private sellers aren't much better...

I've destroyed through regular off-roading 3 tacomas... they aren't bulletproof AT ALL.. they are just nice to drive... but maybe my days of buying them are over... maybe time to say goodbye to Toyota and it's inflated "values" that I will never see due to actually driving them regularly off-road.

If you cannot afford something, do not buy it. Advice I was given and always live buy. Helps out a lot. Get something within your budget that fits your needs.

Good advice. I think Tacomas are great, but I don't think they are worth what they ask for them if you don't plan on reselling them. If you are hard one what you own to the point that all of the components wear out, is a Tacoma worth the money? I haven't seen that they are more durable than anything else. Just like them.

Don't buy a Tacoma then. Are you practicing your speech for the salesmen? Because we aren't the salesmen.

Yeah. I bought mine knowing that it was a little pricey but I would drive it until it died. At 250,000 miles and the memories that I have made with it. I feel like I have stretched every penny out that I paid for it. Not sure what I would do buying a vehicle already knowing I would get rid of it later.

If you're very very very rough on your vehicles why not get something older and cheaper... more of a beater than spending 20k+ on something you intend to destroy. XJ Cherokees are great for this, take a beating and keep on ticking. You've got options.

I'm so pissed it's making me sick to my stomach to see that these trucks have become over-valued to the point of being sold for new prices even when used... the days of your average blue collar guy buying one to actually tear around in and use without worry are gone... of course this is also reflected in the tiny percentage of them that are stick now... so overvalued only yuppies buy them.

I have been clinging to the idea of a 4X4 I can throw my motorcycle in the back of, but if I give that up and just get a trailer that might be a good option.

well, in a 2wd configuration a front wheel drive corolla could probably get more places, due to weight distribution... physics, brah. :)

It isn't just these trucks, it is all vehicles, assuming we are talking new anyway. My truck was about 24k, that is not too far from as cheap as vehicles get. If we are talking about the used market, if Tacoma's aren't that great for your uses anyway it doesn't matter if you think they are over priced. I think houses in San Fransisco are over priced but I don't really care because I will never buy one. JMO

two first gen for cheap, drove into the ground and one second gen... they haven't outlasted anything else I've driven, they are just aesthetically nice... but the prices on the used market now are worse than when I was buying new practically in 08.

Their value is a circular argument that has spiraled so far away from their actual function I'm amazed, as the last time I priced them was 9 years ago.

you're absolutely right. This is just disgust and resignation, knowing that I will probably never be able to afford to buy another tacoma (or new truck in general) and really drive it the way i like. The fact that they make almost no manual configurations tells me that they don't cater to guys like me and haven't for 10 years apparently. The local dealership didn't have a new manual 4X4 within 300 miles in their system either. I think Toyota has broken up with me... not the other way around.

Yup the manual tranny disappearing over the years is tearing a lot of people up around here haha. Once again though, they are disappearing from almost everything. I am a believer in voting with your wallet. Good luck.

Gotcha gotcha. I have not kept up with the used market at all so I am not the one to discuss it much. Buying the older ones cheap makes sense for purchasing three tacomas.

I didn't mean to insult everyone here and imply you are yuppies (technically I am a yuppy except for the urban part) but it really makes me wonder what kind of people they are marketing the new stuff to... what happens when the first gens are completely worn out and the second gen manuals are almost gone too? I really feel like Toyota has dumped me years ago and I didnt' realize it until I started looking back into Tacos again now that I killed my 96

truth is I didn't really like the extra weight, standard "backup cameras" and garbage I saw on the new Tacos at the dealership. If I could have a brand new, Mint 98 4X4 2.7 liter extended cab Taco versus a 2017 I'd pick the 98... but unfortunately they are dying out... the last 96 I got was 18 years old when I bought it and only lasted 3 years... lots of hard years that thing endured. :(
