Look, it's not like I'm saying the new Toyota buyers are like the truck equivalent of Tesla buyers... it's not like I'm _not_ saying it either. :)

    heard that too...

a totally quiet off-roading vehicle would be awesome, strangely enough... just like some of the all electric dirtbikes would let you see more wildlife in nature. I actually think that would be cool.

So don't buy one. We don't give a flip. If you think you will change anyone's mind here by your pitiful argument it won't happen.
Neglecting the shit out of a vehicle and expecting it to last forever is sheer ignorance.

On a serious note, care to elaborate what things you have "killed" in your previous tacos? Pumps, bearings, seals, engines, shocks, etc.? I mean from the way I see it the Taco is a beautiful machine, that like other machines...has moving parts. I would venture to say that any vehicle that man has made requires processes to achieve some realm of longevity. Toyota is exceptional at creating a stable and quality platform for the average commuter, assuming they have the due diligence to respect the creation and be aware and execute proper maintenance cycles, check for issues especially if pushing it beyond stock expectations.

You can argue that Toyota might false advertise that their trucks are ready for off road. At the same time, off-road is a somewhat "loose" statement as it can mean a dirt fire road, rock crawling section, wide open dez, etc. With that being said, it is on each of us to discern to some degree what our vehicles can handle based off interactions with additional/aftermarket components, driving style, and terrain visited.

To simply just drive your Tacoma into the ground with little to no regard for the components, or to not verify their condition after a trip or two is just asking for it. Maybe its because I see this as an engineer and I try to appreciate things and understand what their honest limitations are that I can have a respect for what should be done to keep my truck in one piece.

I paid only 28k for my 2012 dcab back in 2013...this was never advertised as a class 1 trophy truck, nor did it have any parts that dictated it could achieve that style of driving. Its a commuter truck that many people of all ages and sizes drive that might NEVER see dirt outside of a bon fire get together. Keep in mind that Toyota likely makes more business on the average consumer that for all intensive purposes, just needs a truck to commute stuff, babies, animals, whatever. They arnt claiming this is some Raptor equivalent that can take anything you put at it, which even a Raptor has limits that arnt hard to hit.

If what I have described fits your mentality, then you have some degree of neglect for your stuff. If that is the case, then yes you will likely push your truck to its endurance limits and have it fail due to supporting items failing that lead to the big component dying and leaving you on the side of the road.

I would consider that you either accept that some level of maintenance should be expected in your next vehicle or simply buy some POS beater that some other guy kept alive knowing that you will single-handedly be its demise due to excessive neglect. I am rough on things myself, but if I don't respect the item and inspect it periodically as its user manual likely states, then I am only to blame. There are too many hard charging folks on here, especially in the LT section that have kept their vehicles in good order after some epic jumps and hits.

It is possible to have a solid truck in a Tacoma.

I'll be the first to admit - this is what I use my truck for at this time in my life - and as a tool, it does the job that it is designed for well.

This really sounds like that kid who rips off the wings of butterflies for fun, and is now complaining that he can't find anymore butterflies.

Seriously, go buy a few Chevy S-10s/Colorados. They'll be cheaper in the long run and you can destroy more of them quicker, I promise.

I respect your points there. In terms of routine maintenance I actually am good with that.

To clarify: "Destroy" actually translates to the sum of the repairs far exceeding the functional value of the trucks, they may still have limped along.

It has been all of the wearable components that give out of course, steering racks etc... of course cosmetically hits with tree branches etc... have destroyed the body on anything I've driven on tight trails. Have either a cracked block or blown headgasket on the newest truck due to water pump failure at the same time as temp sensor failure. Brake proportioning valve is out on current truck, valve cover gaskets go... all of the normal things that may happen.

I suppose in terms of the engines and transmissions those have actually held up and the frames haven't cracked (that I am aware of) with the exception of the current engine and that was an act of god basically. so in a truly engineering world it is inaccurate to say I've "killed" the trucks... they just get to the point where cosmetically and in terms of things outside of the drive train most things are shot.
