Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

Everywhere I go someone wants to buy my 02 DC 4cyl SR5 Pre Runner as it only has now 62k miles on it and that's on a 15 yr old truck . My local Toyota Dealer keeps asking me if I want to sell it and I keep saying no !!

I'm in Socal and I've booked the value on my 02 at $14k and I know the right person ever came along I could easily get $20k for it

I've only put 6k miles on it since buying it last year from the original owner . At the current yearly mileage its going to take a long time before it ever gets really high miles on it . I'm going to keep my truck for a long time , but if someone ever offers me $20k or more I might sell but who knows

Warning...the following is a stream of thought from someone who suffers greatly from ADD and is somewhat academic. Nobody should find it offensive but some might find it useless BS :)

Value is an interesting thing. When I teach pricing in my marketing class we spend a lot of time talking about what people will pay for what sorts of items. To put things in context we talk about how the customers assign value based on felt need or want. At one end of the extreme you have pure need, and by need I mean what you need to keep you alive, not what you think you need. Then there are things that you don't need to survive but do have utility to make your life more enjoyable (a dishwasher, for example). At the other end of the spectrum are things that are purely aspiration, things that make you feel a certain way that you want to feel (powerful, successful, attractive, etc.). In between there are all sorts of variations and mixtures. Of course few things are purely one thing or another. For example, a Rolex is an aspirational product; people buy it because it makes them feel something (successful, more attractive, etc.), but it also tells time and therefore has utility. The thing is.. in relatively wealthy societies people spend the least on what they need and the most on aspirational wants. We will pay ridiculous amounts of money for something that makes us feel a certain way and, in the worst case, makes us think we are something we are not.

There are very few of us who NEED a truck. Some really do need one for work to make a living. Some people will chime in and say "I need a truck to go hunting, fishing, off-roading, to haul my motorcycle" but for us we do those things to enjoy them, not because literally need to. In the 1980s when Marty McFly came back to discover he had a new truck, trucks became an aspirational goal for a lot of teenagers who never thought of wanting a truck before. In the last 10-15 years it seems that trucks have become aspirational products for an ever growing part of the population that doesn't need a truck and most often don't even find much utility in one (never off-road or use it for hunting, etc.). The bottom line is: the less people need a truck, the more they are willing to pay for one because it is filling more of an aspirational want. If I am Toyota (or Ford, or Chevy) I can charge a lot more for a truck if it makes someone feel a certain way than I can if they need one. Sucks for people like farmers, construction workers, and landscapers who actually do need one.

Oh my, it appears that I have put half the class to sleep....

In discussing my relatively bland debadged Tacoma, more than one person has made reference to "that truck" from Back to the Future. It's so strange how many people can trace their love of trucks back to that movie. They even made an updated show truck that was a callback to that one.

I've always been a Jeep guy, but when I needed 4 doors, I think a little McFly seeped into my decision making process. I do use it as a truck nearly every weekend, but my coworker uses his minivan as a truck as well and can fit 4x8 sheets in it while I have 3 feet sticking out the back, so who really does "need" a truck...maybe none of us, but I have no plans to get rid of mine for at least another decade.

The strap around the body. The one shovel. This looks like a project that was probably abandoned.

I remember seeing something like that with a Jeep buried up past the roll bar in the Anza Borrego desert back in the early 90's near the Dos Cabeza campground in a deep wash

Not sure what you read into that. By "academic" I meant interesting but without a lot of practical value. Some people like that sort of stuff, some see it as a waste of time (and it can be). Has nothing to do with how educated one is or how smart (which are not the same thing).

Edit...I re-read my post and realize that the adjective "academic" was an ambiguous reference that could appear to be referring to myself. I meant it to mean what I was about to say was somewhat academic (possibly boring).
