Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

A little late to the party for this but my $.02 is that I will agree the used price is inflated badly. That being said if a vehicles resale value is based on demand for vehicle/longevity then maybe the prices are right (idk)? It took me 3 months of finding/negotiating a price for mine. There was one older gentleman who was asking 3k over NADA value and wouldn't budge more than a couple hundred bucks. Funniest part is as I was leaving he said "just sleep on it and we will talk tomorrow about it". He calls me later that day to say "don't get in a rush to get a loan I found a buyer"; as if I was going to pay his over the top price. His actual words were "I know what I have here and someone will buy it at this price" So I mean he isn't wrong, If people are willing to pay that price then that's how the market plays out.

I ended up getting one that was 2 years newer, actually had 4x4 with 10k less miles for 2K LESS THAN HE WANTED FOR HIS 4X2.

At the end of the day I always think that if you aren't comfortable with a price for something walk away and wait for a good price. Either I'm lucky, patient or good at negotiating because the taco I got myself and my dad (his from the local Toyota dealership) was slightly below NADA value and we felt like we got a good deal all around. Talked my guy down $2,250 and the Toyota dealership down over 2k out the door so even more savings on taxes titles and fees.

But yes, I will agree that the market has slightly over inflated the price of a used Tacoma. Will I be using this to my advantage when I eventually sell my current truck? Absolutely...unless one day I just get a new one for the road and make the current one some kind of off-road only beast.

And if you re-read my post you will see I said "you have to balance water pump speed with engine speed". Sorry if I didn't break out the crayons when describing the theory. I assumed people are smart enough to figure the rest out without talking down to them.

It sounds like you answered your own question and a Tacoma may not be right for you. That's likely buying a Honda for a demolition derby. No vehicle is going to be the best for every application.

Great, thanks for the crayons comment, you are a real winner. My comment was legitimate and your response was dramatically over the top. Everyone's a badass behind the keyboard.

I would like to know how any balancing is possible when you pointed out the fact that the engine speed and water pump speed are directly linked. How is balancing even possible when there is no way to turn them at different speeds or make any independent adjustment? I just want to understand your statement... this is another legitimate question, try to treat it as such :)

OP, glad to see your still looking for a Tacoma, its the right thing to do. You can buy a new Colorado 4x4 for the same price as a Tacoma. But when its beat down to parts value, you'll still get more for the Tacoma parts:). The engine will be shot in the Colorado but you can sell the Tacoma motor for good money.

Didn't buy my Tacoma for resale value, bought it for the same price as my previous full size Chevy, Traded it in whith 130,000 miles, shot piston rings and a new set of plugs and its book value was half of what a same year Tacoma was (7 years old). Buying the Chevy was like throwing money out the window.

The 2015 Tacoma off road I have now with 40,000 miles is surprisingly still almost worth what I paid for it. Take good care of my stuff and thought the Chevy would be the only new truck I would ever buy (it was my first new truck) now am a little more optimistic that the Tacoma will be my last new truck, unless I talk the wife into buying a matching 4Runner :)

If you can't buy a truck with cash, then get a loan from a credit union and take care of the truck. Otherwise don't. If you have a high mileage commute as I do, its more important to keep the truck in good shape. Buy a pile of firewood and an axe and get some therapy that way instead of beating your truck (just be careful when you mix frosty beverages with the axe).

You know my old '78 Bronco 4 speed with granny gear was a root diggin machine, but now at 53 years and one orthoscopic surgery already, wouldn't have a truck without automatic transmission in it anymore.

The Credit Union I had gave me some sort of promissary note that was good as cash and according to them accepted at all the local car dealers. Toyota actually snubbed their nose at it and told me the price they had given me was if I financed through Toyota, then I had the option after 3 months to refinance, I refinanced in 2 months anyways for a lower monthly payment through my Credit Union. Toyota really wants the extra money from the financing.

Good luck with your search OP, try and go around them mud holes instead of jumping over them...lol

This thread is all over the place, after reading all the posts I still don't understand what the topic is.

Getting older beats the alternative. ;)
