I know that there are several posts out there regarding on resetting the TPMS light. I would like to let everyone know and just to be clear that using the reset TPMS button located below the steering wheel on the left hand side will ONLY work if you have rotated your tires and nothing else. The owners manual will not tell you how to actually clear the light should you have to change the new TPMS sensor due to dead battery or perhaps the sensor has broken off inside the wheel which happens alot.

The ECU on Tacomas and all other vehicles out there does in fact throw out a code and a MIL light for the tires but a DTC code for the tires is far different than a typical “P0135” that we all recognize by the OBD II scan tool. Unfortunately OBDII scan tool will NOT pick up any TPMS DTC’s.

To really fix and to get rid of the TPMS light, you need to:
    1. Visit an auto shop or dealer who would have a TPMS scan tool(similar to OBDII scan tool)

    2. Purchase a TPMS scan tool(they’re not too terribly expensive). You can get these at Amazon or Ebay

For people who are familiar with an OBDII scan tool but are not familiar with a TPMS scan tool. The TPMS scan tool can:

    1. Register the sensor ID
    2. Clear the TPMS DTC code
    3. Reprogram or relearn the ECU for new TPMS sensor

Hopefully this helps with better clarity

The reset button performs one other function and that is to reset the baseline pressures and thus the low threshold limit. So it works for rotations and tire pressures adjustments.
