TPMS on spare

Hey, If this has been asked before I was unable to find it but I have aweful search skills.

Recently purchased a 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro. My Toyota service dept says that the truck will not recognize the a 5th TPMS sensor for the spare but they did not check anything. All they did was look to see if stock spare had one. It did not.

Two questions: First, how do I find out if truck will recognize 5 TPMS sensors. Second, when I rotate tires do I have to reprogram or will truck still recognize and compensate for new location of sensors

I find this surprising, as my 2nd gen has TPMS on the spare.

 

Half ass dealer answer was that some do and some don't. Because spare didn't have they claim truck won't recognize 5 sensors.

 

Weird, my 2nd gen doesn't.

 

It shouldn't. They stopped putting TPMS in spare tires (from the factory) in 2009 or 2011.

 

They do not read 5!

I have a TPMS in my spare because I am on a 5 tire rotation. I clearly marked all my tires and took all the TPMS codes from each. For $20 they remove the one going to the spare at each rotation.

 

Also I know for a fact neither of my 2nd gens 09 & 13 did not come with a TPMS in the spare either!

Can't remember the model year they stopped doing sensors in spare, but it's on here somewhere.

 

My 07 has one in the spare.

 

Believe it's 2010-2011. Don't quote me on it though.

 

My 08 had one and my 15 did not.

Ok, soooo.

If I am on 5 tire rotation easiest thing to do would be write TPMS ID on each wheel and have them program at each rotation? Hate to spend the $$$ but can't stand the warning light.
