Has anyone found a better way to program TPMS in a 2nd set of tires (mounted on wheels; in my case snow tires from TireRack) than going to the dealership and paying them? Is there a programming tool or scanner that only costs like $50? I went through the truck TPWS menu for 2nd set but it seems to register after a short drive and then later forget.

Discount Tire apparently purchased TireRack a couple years ago so that is a good idea except there is no discount tire store near me in the Boston MA area.
SO many Tacoma people have purchased new tires and wheels here someone must have a the solution here. I do not want to go to the dealer and pay dealer rates for such a simple thing. I would buy a TPMS programming tool...but not for $200 or $300 etc.

Are your new sensors pre programmed?

I bought pre programmed sensors for my second set and it took a couple tries for it to finally register them properly and show psi on dash.

Just keep trying, using the menu options and it should eventually stick. I had to use tire set option 1, instead of 2 when it accepted them.

TireRack says they are "woken up" before installation. I have no idea if they are pre programmed or need to "learn" my truck but when you pay for TPMS they should work pretty seamlessly. I can keep trying the truck menus. I have seen readings of 30psi a few times. But I have the tires set at 34. So thats odd but then the readings go away.

I bought the OEM sensors and selected the #2 tire set. The pressures displayed within 1/4 km on my first drive.

It's in your manual. Read up on the TPMS and alternate tire set information... There are exactly zero steps that require special tools if your TPMS sensors in the second set are compatible with Toyota. The entire process is designed to be self-contained and managed.

Anyone telling you a special tool is required needs to read up as well

    Page 507 in your manual
it looks like garbage trying to copy in, so go read it.

Page 511 contains 2nd wheel set information

The process in the manual didn't really agree with the steps on the screen. I just followed the screen.

Tire rack sensors are probably not programmable. Our Subaru got winter tires from Tire rack and they purchased the sensors from the Subaru dealer across the street. I ended up buying an Autel TS508 kit that came with the tool and 8 Autel MX programmable sensors. It cost me $272 at Advanced Auto (in 2020) but the sensors have to be worth $30-40 each and I used them on my 09 Tacoma and 23 Tacoma for the snow tires and rims I had purchased. After the Subaru dealer charged $65 when he quoted $40 to just relearn the positions I decided to buy the tool. The Tacomas I've had only have an idiot light and not the 4 pressures on the display (2023 had the full displayed pressures on the test drive but when the head unit was updated during delivery they disappeared. The SR is not supposed to have that feature). I cloned the OEM sensors so I don't need to relearn on the Tacomas. This model is easy to use. Don't know what the current price is for the tool alone.

I should not comment about trucks I know little about.

This is why I got cloneable sensors. Both my sets of wheels have the same ID's

Otherwise I would get one of the tools, or install techstream and buy the dongle from Amazon.

(I did not realize this was in the 4th gen section, not sure if the "availiable" versions of techstream work on your trucks)

i just did this for my SR5 - generic sensors - wording on the screen didn't exactly match the manual, but pretty close. Basically go into settings- tire monitor- "2nd set" ( or something close to that" initialize - that's it. Manual said it could take up to 30 minutes of driving, but I watched and it only took about 5.
The key was there was 2 options - one said "switch to second set", the other "initialize 2nd set", make sure you pick the correct one, otherwise it sits there looking but not updating

I have no idea how to "clone factory sensors". I do not want to buy more gizmos. Tire Rack sold and installed Pacific 315 mHz which they say is what Toyota uses. I have tried like 10 times to follow menus in the truck settings for reading or setting pressure for a 2nd set of tires and it doesnt seem to work. It's fairly clear on the truck menu so I dont imagine there will be wonderful magic in the owners manual but thats where Im going next.

Take it back to them. They should be able to set them up for free or little to nothing since you purchased from them

Truck #3 what year is your Tacoma? My 2023 SR that does not display individual pressures and has no feature on the head unit for adding a 2nd set of tires and sensors. Since my truck doesn't care what position a tire is in I can get away with using my Autel cloned sensors on the winter tires and not worry about resetting every winter and spring or when rotating. When I looked at the higher trim level features nobody said anything about a feature to add a second set. This sounds like something new and would be a welcome addition if it worked.

Ok folks. I succeeded at getting new TireRack tires wheels and sensors to work. For those who don’t know; TireRack is an online store for all things tires and wheels. So “take it back to them” doesn’t really apply. My truck is a 2024 TRD Sport. TireRack used to be awesome for products, price and support. They were bought out I think in 2021 by Discount Tire. Customer Service reps seem to be less helpful now. I won’t go so far as to say they are bad now. Just not as good as before. I’ve bought lots of full sets of mounted tires from them over the years. The truck owners manual is sketchy at best for directions on setting your 2nd set of tires and wheels on the 2024 Tacoma. But the TPWS menu has the settings. The manual does say something about driving 25-35 mph for 10-30 minutes. This seemed to work. So far pressures are showing and they held overnight. Fingers crossed. Hopefully this saves me and others a frustrating and expensive trip to a dealer or tire store.

You can do it yourself with a handheld programmer. Here’s the one I use.

I just said I did it myself. No additional $$ or devices needed. But thank you all who offerered advice.
