Will the 2021 tacoma rubber tpms work with a 2017 tacoma?

Basically I’m trying to put 2021 Trd Sport wheels with the rubber tpms on my 2017 TRD Sport with out having to remove my original TPMS (metal stem ones)

All stems are usually rubber over a nickel plated alloy (the threaded part), are you sure the metal stem you mentioned is not simply a cosmetic sleeve?
But yes, as long as you have a way to register the new TPMS IDs to your truck, you should be good.

EDIT, in saying that, many people on here have had issues registering new TPMS sensors.

It should work, its the same frequency dual channel, but that said they can be finicky. I haven't seen a 2021 model set on an older truck yet.

even my Toyota dealer said the same.. no one ever came in yet with the 2021 wheels on a 2017 so they wouldn’t know. But they do know that the 2021 tpms is different from the 2017. They don’t know if it’s compatible to program.

worst case is take mines off to put on the 2021 wheels but I’m trying to avoid extra work!

The TPMS sensors on my '21 TRD Sport are like your first picture (gray hard shell with a hex head) and not your second picture. I'm not 100% sure if the stem shells are metal or plastic, but I would guess metal.

It looks like you could transfer your original TPMS sensors to the new wheels without any trouble.

If you look at both tire sensors, there should be written somewhere the frequency.
