Word to the wise: don’t button everything up till you test. Since I stashed mine in the dash behind the head unit, I did my test and tuning with the head unit sitting on a box on the center console with all the wires just hanging. It was all soldered, just wasn’t loomed together yet.

It looked a hot mess but nothing will piss you off worse than ripping a dash back apart five minutes after you put the last screw back in.

    This.
    This.
    This.

never put the car back together till it works.

I can tell you every job I did that I had to re-do, and in every one of them I lost track and put the whole car back together before I tested.

It is entertaining to see the look on someone’s face when the car is still half apart and covered in wire spaghetti but you got everything lit up.

I have done the tweeter change out. I’m going to do the kicker 4 speakers (Kicker 46CSC) next with the Kicker 47KEY200.4 and see how it sounds using the “Tpp4's No Nonsense Guide to Kicker Key T-Harness”. Also are speaker baffles worth installing?

    Parts I have ordered:
    Metra 71-1761 87 - 94 Toyota Vehicle Harness
Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness for Toyota 87-Up Power 4 Speaker
Under the head unit, any heat problems reported I’m in San Antonio TX? Kicker 47KEY200.4
Kicker 46CSC6934 CS Series 6"x9" 3-way car speakers Front Doors
Kicker 46CSC674 CS Series 6-3/4" 2-way car speakers Back Doors
Noico 80 mil 36 sqft car Sound deadening

    Contemplating ordering:
    Kicker 8 hideaway sub

If I decide that I want to add the Kicker 8 hideaway sub is there anything I can do now to make it as plug and play as possible (Future proof)? Or would it just make more sense to do it all at one time and get it out of the way, I really don’t want to pull everything apart later. I’m not an audiophile, but I would like a bit better sound I have not installed a system in years and I want to make this as easy as possible.

I have the door pullers and soldering gear/ shrink tubing. 2018 Tacoma double cab/ off road, non-jbl, Thanks any opinions/corrections welcome.

Thanks to OP and everyone who has contributed to this thread. I was able to finish my harness and everything is working just fine, but I can’t get the amp to fit behind the radio and don’t feel comfortable leaving it there given the amount of wiring that’s already there. I want to put the amp above the glove box like some members have done previously, but my harness is too short to reach.

What kind of wiring do I need to safely extend the harness so I can reach this location? I have no previous wiring knowledge so sorry if this is really basic. I did some research and it seems like the wire gauge matters most, but it also seems like wires have amp limitations. I was about to pick up some 16 gauge wire from oreilly’s but the amperage limit was 15 amps. I believe the radio fuse is 20 amp, so would this wire not be sufficient? Any pointers would be much appreciated!

Swing by your local car stereo shop or BestBuy and ask if they have any scrap speedwire you can have or buy. You only need a few feet. Also ask about scrap 12awg wire. Ideally black and red or yellow, but any color will work. All black, all red, all whatever they may have.

    Thanks for the response @destin_meeks

I’m assuming the speed wire is used to extend the white, greys, greens and purples? And I can use the 9th wire to extend the blue wire from the larger amp harness? Then the 12 awg wire would extend the power and ground (red & black)? Appreciate the help

@destin_meeks Could you let me know if this looks okay, also other than leaving the 2 RCA connections is there anything else I can do if I want to add a hideaway speaker? Thank you...

    Looks spot on.
Do you have any scrap wire laying around? The only thing I might consider is adding about a 6” pigtail from the blue wires. Cap it off for now. This way when you add your sub, you have a remote wire ready to be spliced on to so you don’t need to tear into your harness again

@destin_meeks & @tpp4, thanks for all the info and write up. That sucker sure is tight behind the HU.

Sounds great, or at least a lot better than stock. Also if you wanted to buy another key amp harness, they (Kicker) does sell them for $25 for both. No I didn't another, just wondered.

Anyone know of a tutorial similar to this for the 2020+ and the kicker key?
