Hello everyone. New to the group but Long time Tacoma and tundra owner but got a stupid question. Just bought a 2022 Tacoma and the dealer told me that the new tps sensors on my stock trd off road wheels are not reusable. Are they shitting me? Or is this a new thing? Has anyone ran into this before? Thanks in advance

Some sensors are not compatible with some wheels. Especially some aftermarket wheels.

They said the tps sensors on the new wheels don’t come off like the olds did. There a one time use thing. Doesn’t completely surprise me for them to make more money but also would think it’s bullshit as well

Not sure as I never changed the rims on any of my tacos or cars just the tires without any need to replace TPMS maybe it Bullshit.

Bullshit. If they don't come off that means when the batteries die you have to buy new wheels.

The steel wheel sensors can't be used on aluminum wheels but the OEM sensors for aluminum wheels can be used on aftermarket wheels.

    Two possibilities here:

    1. They are covering their incompetent technicians by telling you the sensors are a one-tiem use item, so when the idiots break your sensors you gladly pay for new ones...not them.

    2. They are going to re-use the originals and charge you $500 for replacing them.

Why are you having them change the sensors anyway? Go to Tire Barn, Belle Tire, Discount Tire instead

Sorry new to posting. That’s what I was thinking. The reason I used them as it was part of my deal. Just called my buddy that works there and he’s looking into it. He’s said if there wrong they will get a new set for me. I’ve sold my stock wheels with the sensors already.

Yes, I agree go for a second opinion at any tire store and see if it is true. Also make sure that the tire store has experience with these sensors as they are very easy to destroy while changing tires.

Anyone that can't replace a tire pressure sensor without breaking it is a moron.
The experienced service technicians at dealerships don't do oil changes and wrestle tires, the newbies get those jobs. Some of them are just inexperienced, some are idiots. Tire techs at Discount Tire, etc have one job. They better know how to do it or they won't have a job long.

Good luck with getting resolution. At best they will offer you a 50% discount on new TPMS (their cost)
For future reference it's easy to tell when a dealership employee is lying...their lips move

True to what you say but then don't forget the TPMS have been around for quite a few years now. In the beginning when they first came out tire changers where not aware of these new gadgets and accidentaly destroyed them not knowing they were there till they opened the tires up. Now there are signs of these sensors there by looking at the valve stems. So if they get destroyed like you say it will be by an inexperienced service man.

Lol. You will find this not to be true. Instead of them saying that they ‘didn’t know’, they just made something up. Happens all the time. Trust, but verify here is the best thing you did.

They probably can't guarantee it'll fit. There was a member on here that bought RRW wheels, which are compatible with OEM sensors, and only 1 or 2 of the OEM sensors fit, even though all 4 wheels and sensors were the exact same. I have no idea how that happened

My 2021 TRD OR had a different style TPMS sensor. The valve stem style is almost like a normal stem but has a T10 screw attachment for the TPMS sensor. Some older style Toyota sensors had a metal valve stem. Any experienced technician will have no problem transferring the sensors to new rims.

TPMS has been around since the late 90's.

TPMS has been mandatory on new (US sold) vehicles for 15 years. There is no excuse for one to be broken because the tire technician "didn't know"

Edit: I've broke down a tire, applied an inner plug/patch and remounted it using nothing but tire levers and didn't break the TPMS.

Did you not get the memo about the TPS sensors? Yeah, that would be great.

I have not seen them, but Chrysler dodge ram in about 09 switched from aluminum ones with a nut to rubber pull through like regular old school stems and had replaceable stems with a sending unit attached. My 21 has stems like that, my 19 SR steel wheels had the other style.

The sensors are re-usable, but there's a 30% chance a leak will occur. :) The tire shop should be able to sell you a rebuild kit or service kit for the sensors: https://www.discounttiredirect.com/learn/tpms-rebuild-kits
The rubber type have rebuild kits available as well. Most aftermarket sensors are the rubber type. They work fine but used to have a lower speed rating (centrifugal forces probably became too much without a threaded metal fitting).
