I know this thread has been put up before. Just a question. If the cause is the gas cap, how long until everything returns to normal after tightening gas cap?

Also what other issues cause this other than a gas cap? I’ve been up in the mountains of Idaho for two months. Went from sea level to 6000 feet. Very dry and dusty up here

If you have a scan tool you can find out what codes or faults it has.

I don’t. Im in a bit of a pinch. I’m literally in the mountains of idaho. Minimal tools. I tightened cap and disconnected the battery. I will have to drive a bit to see if it worked.

I doubt it is the gas cap, probably a bad sensor somewhere

Have you been wheeling in the mountains? Maybe you snagged an ABS wire or got something wet.

Unfortunately it could be lots of things, and we'd only be guessing,.
Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear.

I hear you all. No heavy wheeling. Just light off-road and fly fishing. Nothing big.

My fiance lost her gas cap (more likely forgot it somewhere) on her VW Cabrio. Just the check engine light came on. My cheap ($12) ODB II Wifi gadget from Amazon pointed me right to it and as soon as I installed the new cap, the light went out. Not sure on the Tacoma, though. If you have Amazon Prime, you can get one delivered in a day or two.

    OP,
I have had same issue with mine. Normally it will take about a full tank worth's of driving in order for the system to recalibrate (assuming the problem was due to not tightening the cap properly). It's a crap shoot, could be 2 days, could be a week... depends on your driving habits.

I found my problem was due to a faulty charcoal canister. When you get a chance, have dealer do full diagnostics... don't let them tell you it's just gas cap issue... be weary.

if you're stuck in the mountain, you just need to weather the storm for now. good luck.

If you tighten the gas cap, disconnect the battery for 1 min, then reconnect and start up, the light should clear. If it comes back, it was not the gas cap (unless it is defective). If you don't have any drive-ability issues, disregard the light for now.

No I’m not stuck. Thank you though. I really don’t think it’s a sensor. I’ve been very kind to this truck. It’s always possible but I don’t think so. I wil get it checked when I get down the mountain

Well tightened cap and disconnected battery for 3 minutes. All lights were off when reconnected. I’ve gone 12 miles and the lights have stayed off. Everything seems to be normal. Time will tell I guess. Thanks guys for the input. I will keep this thread updated with the end result of my trip
