There is a rattle in the front end that can be heard while running dirt roads, small bumps etc. I've been trying to track it down. I had the wheels off today and noticed on the right side that the wheel studs move slightly inside of the rotor. The other side they don't move in there, so I'm guessing they aren't supposed to... Also, on this same side, the inner cv joint housing slides every so slightly in and out of the differential. The other side has no play. How much play should there be?

On another topic(or maybe not?), my calipers and pads were reportedly changed out by the dealer a little over a year ago. They've seen salt roads all winter, but to me these don't look like they were changed....am I off base? Do these get this old looking, this quick?

The rattle is your wheels studs hitting the rotor, the brake pads needs to be replaced(pretty bad looking cracks in them).. Your calipers might be seized as well(may be the reason the wheel studs are hitting the rotor)ie, rotor's not turning free enough with hub(because of seized calipers?)

I would take it back to the dealer then, I've never seen oem pads crack like that, especially in a year.

If these were in fact changed, they only have about 17k miles on them. Would they look like this after one winter in the PNW?

The calipers may look like that in a year with bad winters, but not the brake pads.

If a Toyota dealer did the work, then that have a 1 year warranty on them.

I live in the PNW and do a lot of winter driving in the mountains and mine look way better and are not new. Besides the obvious cracks in the pads, they also look to have uneven wear. Rotor looks about right but the calipers sure look like crap. Did they re build them or bill you for new calipers?

I was billed for new calipers and pads. I had the truck in for service, and they kept it for warranty work (replaced leaf packs). The leafs were on back order, and they had my truck for close to a month. My suspicion is that they didn't do ANY work until the leafs came in, and then forgot to change the calipers and maybe the pads. I do not believe there was any bad intent here but maybe a mistake.

    just a few things.
that is normal for rebulit/refurb calipers to look like that because rebuilt calipers dont have clear coat on them so they rust very easily. at our shop we spray clear coat them before installing them for customers. The pads are cracked becuase you over heated them. do you have a squeaking sound when you break? Also rotor shouldnt hit the studs when you have the wheel bolted on. you can try to go back and see if you can warranty the pads but thats about it.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
In 40 years I have seen many brake pad issues but never cracked like that, see, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

it was $320 for a pair of "Aftermarket" calipers. I went to the parts store where they get parts from; they tell me the calipers they offer are OEM  whatever that means.

There is a bit of a squeak but only when the truck is cold. I don't know how I would have overheated them. Towing a boat is new to the truck since this "service"....maybe that had something to do with it. The trailer has 4 wheel surge brakes though. I don't feel like there'd be much more stress on the truck.

Update. Dealer put the truck on a lift to inspect, and they claim that they did in fact change out the calipers and pads. The service guy said legally he has to recommend a pad change, but if it were his truck he wouldn't worry about it. the cracks are no big deal o_O

Besides that, the tech thinks theres a bad wheel bearing, and I need a new PS rack. :notsure:
