2019 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 off road
I just bought a 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 off road. When I am stoped in the middle of a steep hill
and go to take off my traction control light comes on the dash and a noise occures that sounds like the traction control is trying to kick in and out. I had it to the dealership and they tell me that that is a comon thing with Tacomas because it has hill assist but the noise is so ugly that I cant believe this is common with Tacomas. Any help is appreciated

Maybe there is a difference between the auto and mt. I don't know, but it absolutely is normal on the auto.

He's being /sarc. There was a raging debate about the OR / Pro MTs not having Hill Assist and the Sports and SR MTs that have it. Ours is an simple, quiet line lock feature that is buried in the ABS unit.

This same subject comes up continuously in the both the AT and MT camps. Not much different than the 3.5 versus 4.0 or Sport versus OR or AT versus MT or any other hair splitting discussions that occupy 95% of TW's threads.

That said, ABS pumps have been making just about the same noise since they first launched in the 90s. Nothing new or ugly about it except that they might be quieter in some cars depending on their location and specific brand.

Traction control uses the ABS system to modulate the brakes on and off on the wheels that are spinning. It also derates the engine output to limit the slip. The sound you are hearing is the ABS modulation events. It sounds harsh but is the system working to give you traction and get you moving and completely normal.

What until you try out crawl control for the first time if you want to hear some real noise...

I’m confused about the hill assist...especially in 4H on an incline when I take my foot off the brake I roll back pretty badly then when I press the accelerator I get the traction control light and grind pop awful sound. I end up having to 2 foot the brake pedal and accelerator. In 2WD, same but roll back is less and in 4L no roll back. So how is the truck assisting me?

    EDIT: in the AT

If your truck is rolling back then the hill holder is not active. Hill holder retains the brake pressure for a couple seconds or until forward movement is detected.

My MT equipped truck has hill holder active regardless of transfer case settings. If the hill is steep enough, it will engage. I have never driven an AT version of the truck so I do not know if you have hill holder or not. It would be a matter of how Toyota programmed the truck. All the pieces that are needed to activate hill holder are there and the same regardless of the truck.

Also a side note, the hill holder only holds uphill, not downhill. If that isn't obvious.

My truck does the same thing even while going up my driveway, if I let go of the accelerator and step on it again it starts making that clicking noise and the truck starts rolling back I literally have to slam on the brakes. Any new updates??

It's supposed to do that. It's hill assist not holder. It's only supposed to be active for a little bit. The thing you are hearing from what I have researched is the brakes cycling on and off. The computer is trying to figure out what you want it to do. Either roll back or maintain so instead it slows the roll down. The reason why it does it when you step on it again is because of the throttle delay (lot's of topic here on that dumb accelerate by wire tune). So when you let the accelerator off; it holds it for a bit, but when you step on the pedal again, the throttle takes a bit to kick in/register so the hill assist lets go and does a "control" roll back.

It's not suppose go forward unless you regear and increase torque.
Its HILL ASSIST. Suppose to give you time to let go of the brake and transition to gas pedal so it's only active for that split second. If you don't go for the gas pedal or take too long, its suppose to go backwards, but will try to slow the descent (ie. not a free gear decent like you would have sticking it neutral).

I have the 2018 Sport and it has a vacuum brake booster and works quietly. Stop on the hill over a certain degree of slope, take foot off brake and the truck stays put for around 2 seconds or so or until you give it gas, then the brakes release. No rolling back and no noise. The OR has an electric brake booster that works differently than the vacuum booster. I've been in the OR on the same degree hill, let go of the brake and the vehicle rolls back a little and the individual brake cylinders and calipers seem to fire off as if it's controlled by the abs system. Didn't know what it was at first and it was noisey and jerky, not like the vacuum system which is quiet and seamless... I've been told it's the difference in the 2 types of brake boosters and how the computer interprets the signals being given to it. If I remember right it has something to do with incorporating the crawl control into the system, which the Sport doesn't have...
