I bought a Husqvarna, can't remember the CCs, but the 16" bar has been enough for the occasional tree work I have to do on my little acre.

Hoping one of you can help me. I have this MTD rear tine rototiller that I need to find either a carb rebuild kit or a new carb completely. I tried looking online, but I know so little about compatible carbs that I kinda just gave up. It has a Tecumseh engine, if that helps. I also need a new muffler, but that's secondary.

I second the 261. Love it for the power to weight. It will pull a 20” bar easily and quite light for all day work. you mentioned beer money reserves, the time saved in cutting with spending a little more will leave more time for beers.
also look for some older huskys like a 372.

Would it really be that much faster cutting? Than say something like a 271? The 261 definitely is well recommended here and elsewhere but that price tag... Leaves me with $25 for beer. That's not even a 12 pack here. Ha.

The 271 is almost $300 cheaper.

I see some say the 261 will last "forever" but you may only get 10 years out of a 271. It can't be that bad? I won't be thrashing these saws. I don't need to bushwack with them, toss them in the truck, hike with them, etc. I assume if you treat it well you should be able to get more than a decade out of it. Even if the case is plastic.

At most I'd be cutting 6 cords a year and a bit of dead fall.

I have a Stihl consumer level saw, not sure of the number, 16" bar. I've used it to cut at least 15 cords of wood at this point and it is still working fine. I also cut up some really big stuff with it. My favorite feature is the easy pull starter rope; there's a spring in there that you load by pulling slowly on the rope, then it releases and spins the motor. Clever, handy feature.

Not a chainsaw, but I remember many years ago we had a lawnmower with a wind-up crank starter. You would wind it, then press a release lever and the spring would spin the motor to start.

Every Saturday morning you would hear the very distinctive ratchet sound of them being cranked followed by the loud snap as the spring released all around the neighborhood - sometimes the mowers started too. The sounds carried well, there seemed to be dozens of them around back then.

    The handle unfolded to crank.

    s-l1600.jpg

And then snapped closed for use, some had a key lock to keep kids from tinkering.

    s-l1600.jpg

There is a pawl, visible at 7 o'clock, that held the flywheel until the knob on the side was pulled.
As the pawl wore it could release the flywheel before you had the spring cranked up all the way. :annoyed:

With your amount of cutting AND if you are diligent about care your saw(s) will last you many many years. Of course this depends on you buying a quality saw to begin with -like a Stihl, Huskie, or Johnsenred. Bring the saw in and do not leave it out in your truck, start it every couple of months -if not using, and always store with a full tank of gas. Some will say never use gas with ethanol- but I always do and in my 55 years of using small engine equipment -I have NEVER had a fuel related problem -except in our "shared -ownership" wood splitter where my dumb neighbor kept getting water (condensation ) in the fuel he was using. He was storing the metal fuel cans half full in the outsise sun and cool cyclye of the daytime/night.
Don't fool with the carbureator adjustments of 2-stroke, unless you absolutely know what you are doing. These are touchy.
This is why the M-tronic stihls are so nice -they are computer chip controled. The guys that like to soup-up their chain saws do not like the m-tronics as they can't do their "thing" to them. If you want to know more personal experience I have had with the 261CM -PM me - I hate typing!

Faster cutting -- probably not -that mostly depends on several things -Saw chain sharpness, type of chain, type of wood, dryness of wood (green woods of any type cut faster just because of the natural lubrication of the wood moisture. Also hardwoods (oak hickory etc)of any type will cut slower than soft woods (pines firs etc) -thats just common sense. And all of these depend on the saw running at its best. This is another area the M-tronics stand out. I did also mention "type of chain" -Full chisel chains are usually the fastest cutters of the wood chains, problem is -they dull faster and tend to grab a bit more than the rounded over chains. too much "grab" is also called "kick-back" and can be very dangerous to the operator who does not know to control it! be careful with kick-back on a smaller/lighter saw with a shorter bar. Again my experirnce has taught me smaller saws with lighter/shorter bars will tend to rise back at you more than the bigger/heavier saws.

I’ve got a Husky Rancher 460 that has been fine running a 24” bar for some 70+ foot trees I’ve had to drop around the property. That being said, pick any of them from Husky, Sthil, or Echo, and you’ll probably be happy. A friend has an Echo CS590 that he’s used really hard with no issues either doing similar work.

the downside to the 60+ CC stuff like @RustyGreen said is that they are heavy. The pro-grade stuff’s biggest difference is that they get lighter with magnesium parts but I’m not using it every day, all day, so higher end homeowner stuff works fine for me and saves a few bucks

I have worked my husky 435 hard clearing 40+ trees. Mix of poplar, oak and hickory. Thing is a little beast! With that said I recently bought a 395xp with a 32” bar and it puts the little 435 to shame cutting rounds. Thinking about a mid sized saw next, maybe a 372xp if I can find a good deal.

This is sort of the way I'm leaning.

Spending $1000 on a Stihl 261 that I'll use maybe 40 hours a year seems a bit excessive. Getting a top "homeowner" saw for 600 or 700 bucks seems a bit more palatable.

There is one used saw for sale near me.

It's a ten year old Husqvarna 455. Half the price of a new one. Looks to be in good condition just needs a new chain. Anyone have thoughts on this? Is half price still too much? I feel it may be but I don't really know the market for used saws or how much they change over 10 years.

So no good deed will go unpunished it seems. My co-worker is in the process of buying their first home which is situated on 3 Acres. They currently live in a townhouse so they have no lawn care equipment...

A while back I gave my other friend my old 30" rear engine rider. She hasn't used it so I just need to pick it back up...

    0Ldzakc.jpg

The bad part is it has been hard to start for some time despite good batteries. It has the Briggs 21B807 13.5HP Intek which is known to throw the compression release assembly. Just so happens that it only comes with a new camshaft, which is almost $100. o_O So that, plus a new battery and other things I got to do to it, I'm gonna be out some cash just to give it away. But hey, I think it will be for a good cause. Is it too small for 3 acres, well of course, but after all the expense of home buying it can be a financial drain and this is better than no mower at all. The rule is though when they get a chance to get a new mower I get it back and any future breakage will be a small pick-up and delivery fee with only parts cost, no labor. I also have a spare gas powered blower I'll give them.

Got to re-weld the deck and some other things along with tearing open the engine. Gives me something to do.
